Makoto is a really nice dude who tries to see the best in everyone for the most part, and that's honestly really admirable. He's also out of everyone, suppose to be the normal guy in comparison, and to see how he goes through everything is interesting personally. Maybe he a bit generic, but I feel he's pulled off well enough for the kind of series this is at least. Plus he has a great design as well IMO.

Also the fact he basically outsmarted and "beat," Munakata in his own way in the DR3 anime (which I consider to be one of the few honest to god decent moments from it), was honestly really impressive to me. And if other people aren't for him, that's fine. Different taste in what people want out of characters and all.

I feel like a lot of the other students were much more competent. Nekomaru and fucking Gundham, whose talents weren't even related to fighting, were able to hold off a larger group on their own.

That being said, knowing the way he is he probably tried to beat up the crowd instead of heading straight for Junko and got overwhelmed. Even putting that into consideration he would have had a considerably easier time stopping her if he just told Munakata everything. That guy is crazy focused and would have figured out Chiza was lying if Juzo told him the truth. But then he lets the bitch get away because he's an idiot and has the balls to blame Naegi for letting despair into the world.
