The main theme of XIII and XIII-2 are great. Some of the tracks got reptitive but when I hear the XIII-2 theme it hits hard

Masashi Hamauzu is a better composer than Uematsu, so that's not surprising. Saga Frontier II's soundtrack is a masterwork, and Unlimited Saga's soundtrack features the best battle theme of all time.

That's not unpopular. The music in FFXIII is the only good part of the games. And since everything else about them is so bad, the quality of the music stands out even more.

That said, I'd still say FInal Fantasy XIV and Chrystal Chronicles is right up there with them. The more the series goes downhill, the better the music seems to get.

If you consider the single player aspect of FFXIV, which is 90% of the game, it is also rather lackluster. Cutscenes and NPCs just go on and on about junk that doesn't matter at all. And that whole stretch between 2.1 and 2.4 almost made me quit the game it was so boring.

Outside of the PvE story though, stuff like running dungeons, gathering and general classes/combat is probably the best FF has done in 15 years.

This is not an opinion, you're factually incorrect.

XI objectively has the best soundtrack. There's a reason why all the Final Fantasy music tours are named after songs from XI.

Honestly though Chains of Promathia and Wings of the Goddess are probably two of the better story sequences in the franchise as well with Treasures having one of the better finales, although somewhat ruined by PS2 limitations.

FFXI being so good is the reason why always having Shantotto as a rep in crossovers hurts so much.

I really liked FF13's combat system with Paradigm switching and Stagger when it came to bosses, but holy fuck was it drag in regular fights. Fight against Cid Raines aka Paradigms vs Paradigms was the highlight because of that.

Paradigm system did one thing really, really fucking well, and that's give fights an intense "always on the move" feeling that the other FF games just plain lacked. None of them before then had battles anywhere close to the same feeling as shit like the assault ship outside Hope's house, with the possible exception of the airship battle against bevelle's guardian in X.

I can get why some people really hate it, but I'm less uptight about the system I'm using, than whether or not I'm engaged and having fun using it. Paradigm accomplished that excellently.

You'll never have another FF where the final battle is a somber, slow music piece that culminates in the final track singing to the original opening march theme from when the game launched 14 years earlier.

Even if the Rhapsodies was kind of weak that was a hell of a punch to the gut.

FFXI post launch of FFXIV was turned into a sort of express way that made the entire game into a cliff notes version of itself. A lot of the impact of Rhapsodies ends up lost if you never played FFXI before the major systems shift towards aiding solo players.

I'm pretty confident in saying that if FFXI were remade into a single player game today with all its content intact and brought up to graphical parity it would be considered one of the best games in the franchise, if not the best solely for Chains of Promathia, but until Square decides to do something like that it'll remain a mystery to most people simply because it's a product of its time.

You won't get great footage and complete silent let's plays either due to its age.

Lightning Returns: XIII-3 is fantastic so far.

I'm currently wrapping up sidequests before endgame, but this game has everything except a party system.

The plot might objectively be retarded, but I'm enjoying how it's wrapping up loose ends with the cast

Wings and Chains have a lot of reused assets in the original game so it'd be quick enough for the devs to potentially turn that around. Treasures is where it would get hard due to it being a new continent all together.

Zilart I just feel like they'd have to sell with Vanilla because Zilart is pretty much the natural conclusion to the first story line regarding the Crystal War and revival of the Shadowlord.

Plus Divine Might was too fucking good and Sky too great of an area to pass up being a finale.

XIII is in general better than its reputation. I was immensely disappointed when I first played it on PS3, but replaying it now on PC with better performance and original audio, it's like a whole different game. Sure, it's still a tunnel, but not pure torture to run and the plot makes about 3000% more sense. Dayum the localization butchered the whole shit

It's a linear hallway for sure, but emphasis on story telling and battle system sold me.

I actually really hate how XIII-2 made the battle system mostly trivial, since instead of strategy, everything gets massacred by a team of three commandos.

I want to give XIII-2 another go, but every time I think about it, I shudder, since I felt like I was playing it out of obligation more than anything

It doesn't help that the ending was spoiled to me around its release date, so going through all of XIII-2 for achievements feels like a chore.

Lightning Returns is sweet though. Easily my favorite in the trilogy, but XIII-2 has the best soundtrack in the XIII trilogy hands down.

Well I personally recommend using only half of the Crystarium for a first timer or alternatively trying to run from every encounter (I really feel the game is actually balanced around this. It feels quite natural. S-E are idiots.) But for a veteran it needs to be something aggressive like only one or maybe two nodes at most per fragment found plus five for every chapter logo reached. Of course no grinding monster materials in either, since it's the monsters that break the game the most.
