How would you fix him?

The only way to fix him is to make his blue magic not be overdrives and actually make him a sphere grid area

Fuck I wanted him to be good, but he only gets good late game. Fucker is strong late game, but his early game sucks. Pretty much like training a dratini to a dragonair then to a dragonite or tyranitar stages

This, blue magic as an overdrive is what kills him. Him being in the center is also kind of awkward I usually just send him down Rikku's grid for an additional person with steal/use early on. His strength is also pretty solid just from the center nodes so its always pretty nice having someone with a decent strength stat and Rikku's speed. This is all irrelevant in the late game though.

every fucking time. honestly he's left behind by the devs and only gets a few gimmicky moments to shine, i.e. stone breathing the guado at seymour's side.

He's supposed to be a jack-of-all-trades character in a game where it's already easy enough to hybridize practically ANY of your other characters.

Also Lulu is technically worse, as her overdrives are completely garbage. Just use him in her place.
