Controller: You need Hori Mini Pads (picrelated) or a Steelstick modded controller. You also need the OG for games that use the D-Pad because some are brilliant.

Hardware: you NEED the expansion pack. Some games have hi-res modes that need it and others utilize it to improve performance in other ways.

You also want a few memory cards and a rumble pack. Rumble was new here and it is needed for the full experience.

CRT. Not a PVM/BVM as N64s AA looks bad on them. Not a flatscreen. Trinitron would be ideal.

Everdrive 64 if you want to go all in. Great for playing games you couldn't w/o spending a lot.

I wasn't too keen on the N64 for a long time, but I like retro gaming and I decided to give it a real shot with controllers that worked and I was surprised by how many great games were on the system.

Casuals screech about some games that just aren't very good and /v/ contrarians eat it up and act like the system is pure shit because of it.

The truth is it's pretty damn good. Most consoles pre-2000 are. Just don't try and emulate N64 unless you're looking for a shitty time.

Also, if you don't have the money for a SteelStick or don't want to wait to long on the waiting list... buy the Kitsch Bent set of Sticks/bowel and gears, it will look like a new one, you may need to sand a little bit some areas, but they are great.

Also, Paper Mario, Banjo-Kazooie, Pokémon Snap and Waverace should be on the list.
