I just finished playing the specter knight portion of Shovel Knight and the first 5 minutes of that shit made me realize how fucking easy it is to use game design to teach mechanics and it made me even more confused about how fucking professional AAA devs still can't figure this shit out. Probably the most important thing anyone can tell you about game design is that when you get stuck the first thing anyone is going to do is mash shit. Specter Knight can climb up walls for a few seconds and rather than give you a text box saying you can they put you in a pit too tall to jump out of with only your jump and attack moves at that point. You'd be stuck a minute top. They didn't even have to explain the dash slash mechanic, its just organically shown.

The worst part is as players discover this, it becomes more about trying to avoid battles, which running from every fight is anti-fun. If you have some ability that makes it so you don't encounter anything, it's just a running hallway simulator. You either keep fighting enemies and make it so bosses have more health/damage, or you avoid battles and the game becomes less fun. Either way, you either run into the extreme of the game getting too difficult thanks to poor planning on a casual playthrough, or too easy because the player is aware of all of this.

Game's not even that good. Some friends conned me into buying this shit and I spent over the two hour refund period just trying to get the fucking game to even start. You absolutely have to rewrite all the game's values because the default taming times, dino stats, etc., are entirely fucked to the point where you can spend ten actual hours to tame a T-rex and that very fucking rex can't run more than ten seconds without getting out of breath.
