Because of the ring system, its actually harder to tell you've made a mistake. With something like Mario World you instantly know you fucked up by hitting something or falling down a pit. Sonic has that too, but much less so. At least in my experience Sonic is easier to beat, but harder to have a fun time with.

Since everything IGN does is perfect, and because IGN sees games as a disposable medium to make money, instead of enjoyment, Sonic is less enjoyable because it takes more skill to have fun, but not necessarily to complete.

I wouldn't say the ring mechanic is the only thing bringing the game down. There are very few enemies, no bottomless pits, but not in a good way like Sonic CD, and something will have to be done to make the spindash more effective.

That being said even if it is an easy game, I think it would still be enjoyable, I like Yoshi Story after all, and that game is kind of a joke in terms of difficulty.

I noticed it, I happened to play SMB3 and Sonic 2 back to back during my emulator phase in highschool. I had a lot less fun in Sonic 2 despite reaching the ending of it much more easily than SMB3. It's only because I played sonic 2 again and again that I noticed that it was a lot more fun when I had a better handle on the physics.

SMB3 demanded that I play well to get through those tough Ice levels. Sonic 2 demanded I had at least 1 ring to get past Metropolis Zone. I personally like Sonic 2 better than SMB3 but at least for me, it was easy to see why I thought SMB3 was better before I got good at sonic 2.
