NMH2 was better than 1 by far.
Taking out that empty-ass free roam was one of the best decisions they made.

One of the things 1 had over 2 though was the wardrobe selection, so I definitely found myself grinding for cash way more in it.
I couldn't find a single outfit in 2 that was better than the standard one.

I miss the more straight forward Beam Katana progression in NMH1. It's been awhile so I could be just wrong. But while they went out of their way to make all the Katana's good in their own way. I liked how in 1 when you got the green Katana it was pretty much the best one to use. I guess you can argue the dual ones are the sequel's "Best one" but I recall it being weak in damage.

Definitely the Wii version. The PS3 version is a buggy mess and the artstyle doesn't work without all the dramatic shadows.

The extra NMH2 bosses are probably the biggest 'upgrade', but they're really lame when stripped of their original context and they're also not balanced right so you just tear into them.

It's similar to bayonetta in the sense that the sequel received several QoL updates that make the first playthrough much more enjoyable (removing insta-death QTEs or removing the money grinding).

NMH2 has slightly more sophisticated gameplay than the first one, however, but it pales in term of world-building, commentary and boss design

It could be both. Travis co-starring with an indie star as Suda said doesn't necessarily mean it's not a continuation of the previous games.
>>

I believe in the Suda who believes in himself. Still want a NMH3, I'm a sucker for trilogies
>>
>>385453312

In terms of gameplay, absolutely. In terms of charm and style, 1 is vastly superior though and let's be honest, Suda is textbook style over substance. Love the guy, but his penchant for surrealism and aesthetics is his true strong point and that part was better in 1. 2 improves upon 1's gameplay base and pacing in a number of ways but it's still a far cry from a top shelf action game on its mechanical merits.

>>
>>385458386
>NMH2 has slightly more sophisticated gameplay than the first one, however, but it pales in term of world-building, commentary and boss design
Yeah, the first game had much better writing. I know we all wanted NMH2 to be made, but it's the perfect example of milking a franchise. While I'm glad the game was made and that we're getting a third game, the plot kinda went off the rails, and it was pretty obvious that the game was an odd mess of fan service and shitty directions the game went in.

In regards to the combat, it doesn't really matter much that they gave the different beam katanas different uses and let you switch them out on the fly when it took forever to switch for some stupid reason and even worse, enemy and boss design was all-around worse.
>>
>>385458741
You mean title-wise? I can understand that but the way Suda is dancing around giving us a title makes me think it'll be called something else.
>>
>>385459068
It was pretty well established that NMH doesn't give a shit about its own plot. They constantly make remarks about how cliche parts of it is and they straight up fast forward through parts.
>>

>>385459068
I think the problem is that until that point, none of Suda's games had received a sequel. NMH had already flopped pretty hard in japan when it then got released in the west and pulled 300k sales out of nowhere.

But they were obviously not planning a sequel, what with the whole "The UAA is just a con made up to make money" plot point and the constant reveals at the end, with Jeanne as a little girl and the final battle implying that either Travis or Henry died.

They kinda had nowhere to go other than making up an excuse to have 10 or more crazy assassins for Travis to cut through, and that lends itself to fanservice and a ton of unexplained plot holes.
>>
>>385459224
>It was pretty well established that NMH doesn't give a shit about its own plot. They constantly make remarks about how cliche parts of it is and they straight up fast forward through parts.
The first game is a weird example of a game having an excuse plot and that same excuse plot actually having a point to it. Yeah, the story and writing was always tongue-in-cheek, but there WAS a message and direct commentary on video games, those who play them, and the relationship between the developer and the player there.

NMH2 just ruined what 1 set out to do.

>>385459269
>Generic mooks were pretty much a pain to fight in NMH2 yeah. Like those fat fucks for one.
I was thinking the assholes with the guns. IIRC, they can knock you down and then keep you there by repeatedly stunlocking you so that you can't get up. Very annoying and awful design.

>I think NMH2 had a issue with just fucking swarming you with bad guys too.
Yeah, sometimes I did like that, since it felt like I was running the gauntlet, but then they did it way too often, so that it just felt like a huge grind. Got very annoying at the end of the game.

>>

>>
>>385459418
This. Also 2 getting rid of the open world, better mini games, better pacing for earning money, and the sabers actually feeling different. 2 OST is mixed, a couple amazing tracks that surpass the first game, plenty of okay, and a few mediocre. While 1s OST is extremely consistant, mainly due to them all being remixes of the main theme, I feel 1 OST is better overall.

Basically if that new NMH is actually 3, ideally it would have the tone of the first game, but the improvements and beyond of the second.

Actually I hope its nmh3, because the switch is perfect. Nmh never used the sensor bar, all of it was motion direction and the gyro, so the joycons could actually perfectly have the same controls.
>>
>>385459398
I love this game so much but I just hate how Henry just disappears for some reason.

There are so many good cutscenes in that game but I might just have to go with the one right before you fight Death Metal. Great introduction to Travis Touchdown's character and his motivation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-y68RVFiMo

>I don't care about titles or power. I just want to be number one.

>>385459547
Yeah, we all fucking begged for a sequel, but it was fairly obvious that there wasn't really ever going to be a way to continue the plot without massively shitting all over the first game.

What irked me is that they never went meta with it by making some kind of commentary about unnecessary video game sequels and how sometimes you just have to move on or something. I want NMH3/whatever the next one is to do something like that.
>>
>>385459489

To be fair, what that fight symbolized wasn't necessarily a shitty idea. The execution, however, is an entirely different matter.
>>
>>385459919
it's a bit deeper than NMH and you'll probably enjoy it enough if you've already gone through NMH and Killer7, but it suffers in terms of pacing and balancing.

The story's also segmented and mostly bullshit, and lacks (for the most part) the charm and quotability that you'd expect from a Grasshopper game, but it's fun enough and has a strong stylistic focus that helps.
>>
>>385459987
>Basically if that new NMH is actually 3, ideally it would have the tone of the first game, but the improvements and beyond of the second.
I want the open-world of the first game back but done better. It doesn't have to be GTA ffs, just make it a little better than it was. I liked that the game gave you a little bit of "freedom" to let you fuck around and find those orbs, trading cards, or t-shirts. It wasn't much but it did contribute to the game's atmosphere, to the point where I really feel like 2 lost a whole lot by removing it.

I do hope they improve the combat some more though. I mean, that's a given, but they should take what 2 introduced and do it better.
>>
>>385459919
It's pretty stylish. Like a typical Suda game. The combat isn't much to talk about then again. It is a Suda game. I thought it was okay for what it's worth. There really isn't much of a story going on in it though.
>>
>>385459547
The UAA could still be real, the only people who told us it was fake were henry and slyvia's mother who could just be making shit up.

Neither travis nor henry had to die in the final battle, in 2 they became friends clearly

jeanne being a baby could just be a joke
>>
>>385460223
I hate to say, I just dont fucking want open worlds in games anymore. Even as small as the first game was, i just want to play the fucking game.
>>
>>385459919

NMH is like a blend of Killer7 and No More Heroes ideas without actually being anywhere near as good as that sounds. Weirdly enough it plays better than either of those but the narrative ends up perhaps too off the rails to make any sort of lasting impression and a lot of stuff that isn't the main story missions kind of suck. I'd say it's worth a playthrough on the cheap but don't expect Suda's latest and greatest from it.
>>
>>385459919
I'm a fan, it's worth it if you can get it cheap
>>
>>385458974
its just like dark souls
>>
>>385453312
100% disagree. NMH1's world left a lot to be desired but it had a level of charm and atmosphere to it. It also helped pace/build-up the assassinations. They should have improved on it instead of replacing it with menus. Also I don't know what they did to NMH2's engine but it felt a lot more flimsy than 1's. Also most of 2's bosses were worse. 2 wasn't even directed by Suda.
>>
>>385459398
>MISTER SIR HENRY MOTHERFUCKER, HE JUST JETTED
>what a pussy
one of best moments in NMH. every time henry appeared, game was getting better
>>
NMH2 is a shit game and a great statement. It sacrificed so much to prove a point about sequels. The entire game is summed up by the scene where Travis finally fucks Sylvia and realizes what a letdown it was. You thought you wanted it, but it went nowhere. It's been a while since I played it, but by far the biggest flaw I remember is that almost none of the bosses had any characterization. Some didn't even speak to you before fighting. The whole thing was just by the numbers.
>>
>>385460521
>It also helped pace/build-up the assassinations.
this is an excellent point that I think a lot of people miss. There's real frustration when Letz Shake is taken from you and you're thrown back into collecting money, or when they steal your bike before the 1st ranked fight and you have to run all the way across town.

Paradise shat all over the pacing by letting you fight a NMH2 assassin in a dream sequence whenever you wanted.
>>
I wouldn't mind another "open world" as long as they make it very very small and compact, that way they can put a lot of detail into it and not waste my fucking time getting from A to B. I though the hub gave a lot of charm to the game but it was executed poorly.
Also I want them to steal Killer id Dead's artstyle for 3 considering it looks identical to that one early cgi trailer for 1.

I don't care for open-worlds generally but I agree with >>385460521

Doing some odd job, finally earning enough money for the next fight, then finally going to that mission was such an odd but satisfying and exciting feel.

2 felt like there was a whole portion of the game missing. I hated how they replaced the assassination missions you could do between missions with the Revenge Missions, just for one. In 1, I could fuck around and do whatever I wanted between missions. It wasn't much and the mini games between missions sucked but that was arguably the point and the game was more enriched for this.
>>
>Game advertises a bigger league of assassins
>You kill half in one fight

>When you meet her, Alice already accepted her death
The last part of the game is definitely the best part #1 ranked battle just fucked up all of that
>>
>>385462932
not a shock. consider his brother did her first. should have gone with shinobol.
>>
>>385464939
i wish they flashed her out more. she was clearly gonna have some backstory to her but we never see it.
>>
>>385453312
The problem with 2 is that they told the bosses backstory after you killed them.
>This dude was so badass, look at all this shit he did---"Who cares? He's fucking dead now and his fight was easy."

no lie, that picture with Suda drinking a beer to celebrate the game's success in the west really warmed my heart

Guessing you haven't played Nier Automata? That game did t sacrifice anything about the original Nier's creativity despite being outsourced

>Get made leader of project at work to organize this yearly sale
>Spend a bunch of time any money setting it up
>Get told we arent allowed to tell people about the event because it could compromise sales today.

Literally my fucking face when we probably spent more setting the thing up that we made.

>When Nips don't like your game
I feel bad for Suda. Then again. I'm pretty sure he knew Japan wouldn't like it much anyway. Due to their eternal shit taste.
>>
>That NMH2 opening
>Those scenes with Sylvia narrating in a god forsaken whorehouse
>Ripper ripper that's what people call me
>Alicia's introduction
No more Heroes 2 was kino.

I've only played the demo. Poorfag, so yeah. That's a pretty good point though. I feel like getting Platinum to do a beat 'em up that plays nothing like anything else they've done, save Madworld kinda, and is mostly more grounded, whose combat system doesn't really allow you to get CUHRAYZEE, would be kinda defeating the whole point of getting Platinum on board.

Not really a cutscene, but Travis' inner monologue during Death Metal fight really hooked me up until the very end of the game. I kinda expected such monologues for every boss fight, but even just that one was great.
>>
>>385460347
>>385459547
There was a throw away line in 2 where Travis complains about how Sylvie stopped their fight. If you weren't paying attention you probably thought he was referring to their confrontation after Letz Shake but he was referring to the ending of NMH1. Travis and Sylvie named their daughter Jeanne after his sister and the painting was of the past.
>>
>Come on, no need to be shy! Congratulation you naasty little boy! Tell the audience your name!
>Travis Touchdown... It's a good name don'tcha think!
>Fine name indeed. You have your parents to thank for that!
>My parents are dead :D
>Ooops! Touchy subject :DD

With a song that sounds just like "El Bimbo" playing in the background, this scene was perfect.

What about Hotline Miami 3?
>>
>>385471869
This scene was so weird. Stuff like this is what I mean when I say that NMH had a great, surreal, almost dream-like atmosphere. Like, where is the rest of the audience, even? Do his assistants know that he's an "assassin" that kills people?

That boss had a great theme though.

fuck

i think i'll buy his steam game at full price instead of waiting til it's 50% again, I bought nmh1/2 and KiD full price anyway. he deserves more success and appreciation for his games.

>>385464162

It also cut out the north half of Santa Destroy, granted there wasn't anything there but challenge fights, coin/trading card/t-shirt caches and balls in the Wii version, but it takes away from the world building

The "no gore" I can sort of get around, but cutting out the north part of Santa Destroy and one of the best songs in the game? What were they thinking?

Too bad he got wiped clean at 2 though, was thinking how he'd miraculously appear if 3 happened

Come on, stupider shit has happened in the series. It's possible. Or maybe he had a sidekick who's out for revenge.
