SM64 is closer to a mission select level based game. It's just that instead of a menu selecting a level, you navigate Peach's castle instead.

banjo is and always has been a game for retards. mario 64 style game except they couldn't make the platforming fun or challenging so they made collecting shit the focus. tooie owned up to being a game about collecting things and is the closest thing the n64 ever got to a metroid game, making it by defualt better because it has an actual identy besides "mario 64 but with constant annoying sound bytes and retard proof platforming because you can just hover jump", people only defend this game because of nostalgia, which is why one of the main complaints about tooie is that it's not as "comfy" as the first game or other equally meaningless bullshit
