The reason why sony is interested in this is because most of the "hardcore gamers" already own a PS4. They already have the gaming segment with a PS4. The PS4 and Xbox One have FUCKING FISHER PRICE TOY processors that were OUTDATED in 2013 by several years. They are not meant to last long and they are the reason these consoles cost 200 dollars already. Nothing about them is expensive. And despite everything I've just said, people wanted the PS3 and 360 replaced much earlier for holding back game design. I think the jump from last gen to this gen was about what you could expect for the price they launched at. Any bigger a jump and they would have been more expensive than $400. PS3 was the weaker of the two last gen, and PS4 is the stronger of the two this gen. Lots of PS3 games ran at 540p or 640p at 20-35fps unlocked while their 360 counterparts ran at 720p locked 30fps for the most part.
The remasters of those games on PS4 run at 1080p (3-4x PS3 resolution), 60fps instead of 30fps (2x PS3 framerate) and sometimes with improved lighting or some small extra things like touched up character models, added folliage, etc. That's about how big a jump PS2 to PS3 was, just it's harder to notice now.

To be honest I've been putting it off for years now because I honestly had nothing to look forward to. I recall saying something about waiting for Half-Life 3 and so far it's saved me a lot of money.

Honestly, I don't think longer generations are necesarily a bad thing. Developers learn how to compress data or exploit console functions better, allowing for better things on their limited hardware...
