Mai does have relatively mundane issues though. Her initial difficulty with opening to others due to her father teaching her to treat everyone as an enemy and her continuing need to earn her father's acceptance are pretty human issues.

The genderbending was very important for the story of Remix Heart; it's why Mai got sent to the academy where the story unfolds, why she was able to remain incognito despite being the heir to a powerful noble family and why the girls went around the academy looking for a grimoires in order to help her. Also it was central to Mai's character arc since much of her inner conflict and her identity crisis stemmed from her transformation. And the climax of Mai's story involved her accepting herself as she was. You'd need to completely rewrite Mai's manga and backstory if you removed the genderbending.
