Not really. Yu is all around solid, but Heat Riser isn't that great with only three buff slots and only being single target. PQ is all about having specialized party members so being just good all around isn't enough to push you into god tier. Kanji, Akihiko, Junpei, Chie and Aigis all outshine him in terms of damage. P3MC has Debilitate which is obviously amazing and makes him a strong support character, though again his natural skillset apart from Debilitate is just filler trash. I'm not sure I'd really put him into the OP camp either though. Aigis puts every other character (except Naoto for trash mobs) to shame with her inherent utility and insane damage potential, the MCs don't even come close.

Everytime I play my party ends up being

Yu, Aigis, Junpei in the Front Row
Minato, Naoto in the Back Row

Sometimes I switch Junpei for Akihiko, Kanji, or Chie, but the other 4 seem just too useful to not use. Shinji and Koro seem mediocre and everyone else just seems plain bad, which sucks because I want to use Mitsuru but she seems the worst.

The game isn't hard enough that you need to minmax your party. I just finished a risky playthrough with Koromaru (and fuck you, Deadly Vanguard with Teardrop does wonders), both MCs, Ken and Yukiko as my physical damage dealer just because I could. First thing I did when I saw the reaper was rush at it and Yukiko and Yu shredded 70% of its HP after a single turn of setup even though I hadn't even optimized my subpersonas. I also used Mitsuru and Yosuke for most of the Evil Spirit Club because people say they're awful and I wanted to see how much truth there was to that. With ag-lu reverse on Yosuke to bolster Tentarafoo's effectiveness and Mamudo/Mahama split between the two of them they did just fine. Once I get around to doing new game+ I'm making Yukari my linker because it sounds fun.

Maybe P1 and P5? Go for an anniversary marketing approach? Series roots meets its latest incarnation. I so want a PQ game where a P1/P2 cast is shocked that changing Personas isn't a standard power anymore in later Persona casts. Honestly everyone getting multiple Personas again is my favorite part of PQ.

Magic needs more than that. Lowering SP costs and introducing a variety of multi-hit magic attacks like the elemental dance skills from Devil Survivor (obviously with higher multipliers than physical ones because of no crits) is the bare minimum.

I don't like this idea. Instead they should give characters more interesting default skills and give them more than three skills + upgrades, allowing you to mix and match which skills you want like in the mainline games (except with fewer slots so your choices actually matter). Also make everyone's unique ability actually useful.

That's not true though. Protein man and meat girl are horrible, a few others can be grating at times but are usually fine and most of the characters are perfectly fine.

I decided to look this up and it could be a thing. And I would really like that if it is. I enjoyed Persona Q, despite being easily cheesable with Naoto. Even if the personalities got dumbed down, there was still interesting interactions between the parties, especially stuff like Kanji and Ken. Story wasn't that bad either. I'm a fan of Etrian Odyssey so I suppose it's natural I would like it, even if it's a somewhat different flavour.

It seems like a hit and miss thing. Some of the dungeons are a slog (like the 4th one), the random encounters are trivialized by 1 character who has instant kills of both elements and the characters are reduced to, kind of, caricatures of how they are. Like Akihiko can be summarized as "Likes protein, fighting and arguing with Shinjiro".

Now if only Kanji didn't look like a caveman.
