There are also some fangames. I'd recommend the D2 series and the ones translated by Memories of Fear.

Fuck no. 2D sprites translate incredibly poorly to poorly animated cutesy 3D models, the story quickly turns into stupid silly anime bullshit, and they decided to turn the game into more of a "survival horror" game which means levels see you walking around the same sections of the school collecting health items, batteries for your flashlight and more ammo for your "weapon" that can banish the semi-randomly spawning ghost enemies.

Unfortunately, if you are a fan of the series then you owe it to yourself to push through to the end because it actually does have a proper ending to the series. There's a bit of a conclusion to Seiko's whole thing too.

Magical anime scythe girl is from a secret occult society who has magic powers. She at first appears to be the antagonist but ends up helping the main characters save the world. Hoodie boy appears to help Ayumi but is revealed to be the villain who causes the apocalypse because muh tragic backstory revenge against humankind. I don't know why he uses an umbrella but both of them are superhuman and have magic powers. He actually murders a little girl in the most hilarious way possible, he puts a plastic bottle on the floor in the precise spot that makes her trip and falls down all of the stairs and splits her head open. Unfortunately for him, that little girl (who is a returning character from the second game) is revealed to be an inhuman monster bioweapon and servant of scythe girl and her organization. I'm not joking.

Yeah, the plot in BD gets really really stupid. I only forced myself to finish it because it actually does have an ending to the series. Spoilers if you don't care: Edgelord uses book of shadows to merge ghost world with real world, is killed by little girl parasyte monster but they can't stop the apocalypse. The initial villain is Sachi, Sachiko's unborn little sister who takes over the ghost world, Sachiko herself even comes back and helps Ayumi because she's been purified of the evil, but the real villain is like the ancient queen of the Witches who wrote the book of shadows and after a DBZ aerial magic battle Ayumi sacrifices herself to restore the world and the "existence" of her dead friends (because they were wiped from existence after the first game due to reality warping) even though it means erasing herself too. However, post-credits scene shows she's in a vegetative state in a wheelchair being looked after by blonde boy who figured out a way to save her. Also at some point white haired teacher died so don't worry about her.

In a flashback it's revealed that glasses girl from the first game was also a magical girl who had anime battles with scythe girl, and scythe girl considered her as a rival. This kinda completely clashes with glasses girl as she was presented in the first game, a paranormal researcher who got too close to the paranormal and thus died. Scythe girl is like an expert on ghosts and can physically kick their ass so it seems weird that glasses girl would die the way she did.
