That's what comes to mind when I hear that, this level of disconnect between the lives of a producer and the lives of their target audience is so pronounced I'm not too surprised at the strange, almost inhuman decisions these assholes make. Yes and no, because while it's a clear "We must open our borders" story Neill seems to spend half the movie showing how Elysium can only exist as a utopian society by regulating the number of people coming in, while simultaneously showing off how overcrowded and miserable Earth has become.

What Neill did in that original ending was show Earth fucking up that balance the station population was able to maintain, and while Earth is still a dumpster fire, Elysium has now become a dumpster fire too.

That's the reason people hated that ending, they couldn't see anything good coming out of the refugee ships spilling their contents into Elysium.
