Oh fuck I haven't noticed there's a thread already.

Ending spoilers: I ended up freeing the final demon dude instead of myself for the sake of the revolution.. and immediately felt bitter about it. I'm glad the revolution worked out and stuff but a lame scholar is unlikely to survive alone for long in Double Hell

Is this game worth $20? Bastion is one of my favorite games, but I wasn't a fan of Transistor. I'm really here for the music and story. The gameplay looks like shit though.
>>
>>385374979
>you've always got falcon ron
Haha

The Moon-touched girl, Ti'zo and Sir Gilman. I let out all of the people who I figured would be the most helpful to the cause.
The ending text did imply I lived since the girl visited me from time to time and the imp lived with me but I'm not entirely sure how'd that work out. The harshness of the Downside is emphasized again and again. At first I thought my reader would try to improve the Downside now that she's done saving Earth but, really, she's no one now. A no one with a whole bunch of enemies she stole freedom from. Former criminals and worse.

At least I'll always have Crystal Waifu ;_;

To ask that question is to ask why God does not make this world painless and easy,
if you were to take it in a religious fashion

They refuse to judge you, and so they must let your peers do it. If life were so simple, what cause would there be to improve?
A parent must not give into every whim of a child. They must learn to stand upon their own two feet and make this world one that is as simple as you would have the scribes make it.

>>
why are imps so OP
>>
>keep debating getting this game
>Every thread has spoilers I don't want to look at
So is the game fun? I don't much care that it's fantasy space jam, but I'd like a game with a good story and some nice characters.
I've heard it's about 12-20 hours long. Any reason to replay it? Different endings and such?
>>
>>385381889
Imps are the worst after YOU MUST BE OVER 25 TO PLAY THIS RACE
>>
>>385382048
It certainly has a good story. Around 16 hours long. You can replay it but honestly I think it's a game you should only play once. It's even set up in a way that you can't get a game over - you keep on, narratively, if you're defeated and have to live with your mistakes.
>>
>>385382291

I disagree with your sentiment.

I believe you shouldn't save-scum, but playing it again isn't a bad idea, especially if you crank up the difficulty.

It mostly depends if the gameplay hooked you at all.
>>
>>385382291
I think it's worth playing at least a second time. Shake things up, send people in different orders. There is a shit ton of conversations and character building between the characters which trigger depending on who remains and who is gone.
>>
I'd like a game with two narrators competing with one another. One bad, one good. So, you'd have the bad one cutting in and causing bad shit to happen. Bonus points, if the bad one is the DD narrator.

So are the different endings based on who you liberate, how many you liberate, things like that?
Or is it more like you're just given a few specific choices near the end to choose your ending?

Think I'm about halfway through and I'm wondering if the conditions for certain endings are popping up already
>>
>>385382514
>>385382561

>>385383137
like I said before, difficulty has NOTHING to do with how much you enjoy the combat

if you don't enjoy it on Normal, you're not going to enjoy it on Hard, and you're not going to enjoy it with Titan stars. The fundamentals of the gameplay are too strange and new; it either clicks with you or it doesn't. It's a genre in of itself. Think about 4X games: either you like them or you don't, difficulty has nothing to do with it. Same with fighting games - increasing difficulty/playing against better players will not make the game more enjoyable for someone who hates fighting games. The easiest way to think about Pyre's combat is as its own genre. Either you're going to like it, or you won't.

and that's discounting the oregon trail sections. If you don't want 75% of your "gameplay" to be oregon trail, you won't enjoy the game

Strong story, art and music. Gameplay is polarizing at best. Yes there are husbandos but most of them are taken

>>385384781
Who do you have remaining? Hedwyn has that on contact while jumping banish enemy skill, Pamitha and Ti'zo are also good at grounding them especially with the talisman that stuns the enemy after a jumping/flying collision, Jodi's big body might also be good for catching them. Their liberation rite special tactic makes you play defensive at the start of each round but you should be able to turn the tide and maybe try to punish it by banishing the other harps that aren't controlled
>>
>>385385217
You can restart the rites and checkpoints if you go to the menu, but otherwise the game keeps going and if you lose the final rite that guy goes free instead of your guy.
>>
>>385376754

just finished lib rite 3. i kinda spoiled myself on the number of rites left so i've already kinda planned out who i'm going to free for the most part. already saved _ae, Jodi and Rucky and im probably going to free Hendwyn and harp-waifu next.

i like the combat a little bit as there are exciting moments, but there really is no depth to it. i'm playing on hard and at this point in the game the dominant tactic is pretty much "try to banish one of them then rush with someone who's fast" which works most of the time. i feel like whoever designed the rites system didn't really put much thought into how later-game play would actually work.

overall it's pretty good, probably a 6-7/10 so far, strongest point being the art, music and story obviously

>>385388339
i think it's just the ai has trouble on defense, a smart human player would do things like keep a sap/imp/anyone with a big aura near the goal to intercept quick dudes, but the ai always seems to switch too slow and misaim their sapling

it does do an admirable job blocking flying/jumping exiles later on though

>saving _ae
but why
>>
>>385389418
>saving _ae

I was operating on the "children first"
principle, and i didn't know enough about the other's backstory to decide differently. in retrospect i should have sent Jodi first and kept _ae around for at least a couple more cycles

i agree about the ai stuff, but even then it's pretty hard even as a player to stop a fast guy running top-speed and long jumping into your goal unless you're already expecting it. i almost feel like you could enlarge the playing field a bit to make rushing less viable.

Yeah the first liberation rite is before you really get into anyone's backstory. That said _ae in one of her earlier dialogues in the first cycle does claim that she has no family or anyone waiting for her on the other side, its kinda cruel to send her there alone and separate her from mommy Jodi and little brother
>>
>>385389115

>It is enough.... It is enough

I ensured he'd get a chance at the rite,
and they put up a good fight. Sandalwood can dedicate the plan to any high ideal he wants,
my spirit boiled against a commonwealth that would send such a kind old Cur to Downside.
The Plan is for the many, but my part, I dedicated to The Fate.
>>
>>385390291
I'm all kinds of thankful I never had to face the Fate in a liberation rite. From what I've heard it's heartbreaking, win OR lose
>>
>>385388098
Finding Bertrude casting a spell for Gilman and getting flustered when she sees you.
It would have been so easy to make her evil, or have ulterior motives that would have made her a terrible character
But they didn't. She's a sweet old lady and I want to protect her smile, however fleeting it may be.
Shoudst thou seek courage, then may bravery soon bloom within thy heart.
>>
>>385390291
"What good is freedom if it means being separated from you Father?"

They fought with me 4 times, each time they popped up I targeted them so that _ae can have a friend/family. I'm glad they got their happy ending even in the downside, I don't think I can stomach doing a run separating Almer and _ae ever
>>
>>385390518
What good is freedom if we are not together, father?
>>
So should I pick it up? The game play looks fun and the story seems interesting, the only negative I see is no online play
>>
>>385390518

You can say heartbreaking, but it's the most beautiful interaction between father and son in the whole game. Almer is livid that they failed, while his father calmly explains that it was striving that makes them worthy, not winning.

I sent _ae up. I regret that now. I'm doing another run, and come hell or high water, the Fate will lose, and that old cur will die knowing the Commonwealth has fallen, and his son will never be alone.
>>
>>385390771
Pick it up if you're looking for a game that is heavy on the narrative and if you don't mind playing sportsball every once in a while. I personally loved it and felt it was an amazing experience. I can totally understand people who it doesn't click for, though.
>>
>>385390869
I love a good narrative experience and the sports ball seems entertaining enough. I might as well
>>
>>385390834
>>385390291
So do you have to face the Fate twice in a liberation ritual to get Almer? When I faced them the dad was the anointed one to go free.
>>
>>385390291
for a second there i thought the game would pull an (postgame spoiler)oralech and almer would fall off the fall of soliam, i had volfred recount the story to me almost prior to that so i was thinking it would be immediately relevant

luckily the old dog's devotion to the old traditions pulled through for him at last

>>385390771
story's great and has lots of possible permutations of paths, art+soundtrack are incredible as expected, and the sports are surprisingly tenable even if you're not into the genre

>>385391024
old doggo anoints his son at the last minute and the fate retire afterward
>>
>>385391024
The dad anoints his son after they win
He is depressed in the commonwealth without his dad, so you need to beat them so they get a happy ending, since you can't ever send both I don't think.
>>
>>385391024

He's pulling a fast one, he pretends he was anointed, then anoints his son and shoves him into the spring. He's an old cur, and dies within two months after the finale. He just wants his son to be free.
>>
>>385373696
I'm like an hour in. Pretty good, definitely better than Transistor.
>>
>>385391208
almer does get over himself and become a civil servant in his ending, using his ancestry to forge bonds with the curs

after bumming him out by throwing, i sent rhae topside with him, and whaddya know, the oldheart name lives on
>>
>>385384865
Like Persona 5's style made turn based battles and dating sim bearable so did Supergiant's style made those kinda work. I cant remember the last game where I read every piece of world building in the game.
>>
>>385389961
do the playing fields differ in size? i feel like the outcroppings on trieste's magma map make it marginally larger than the rest of the fields

not to mention when playing in the glade of lu the roots gradually encroach in on you, even in versus mode
>>
For people mad about sticking behind, I think it was a good option. In the epilogue if you and Volfred remains it say's you're his editor for his newspaper like publication about current events in the Downside. It also suggest you stay in touch with the others. I was more bothered that by outright defeating him, and then claiming the freedom for yourself or the one of the others, he kills himself.
Sandra is great, Bae is the one and only Bae, but I was sad that Jodi Rebuffs your feelings for her. Even tho it made sense, I was still sad. If you want to trigger that you need to use her in a Rite against the Tempers.

I'm just mad I can't plat without buying another controller.

Sandlewood, Bertrude and Sir Gillman are all OK with staying.
Most other members of the party can find good endings in the Downside

Bertrude, because unrequited love always gets me, especially when it's the kind the unrequited is at peace with

Accurate jumps with Crones or Savages can snipe them out of the air and both wyrms and imps are good at getting in position to intercept. Savage's salute ability can turn the fumble from an interception into a rapid return if used well.

Anyone know what happens if you screw up the Resistance (if you lose most fights I guess)? I'm curious to know if everyone still has a good ending.

And yet people still survive.

The scribes literally discovered a method to breach a supernatural barrier between the commonwealth and downside. The fact it requires remarkable amounts of magical power means they devised the rites to ensure only the penitent and helpful could return. Things kinda got mixed up over the past millennium however.

>>385396698

Left path, right choice. It's a hard sell considering it screws you out of

>>385396643
>>385396698

The triumvirates are more or less divided evenly between dangerous, corrupt and benign.

Letting anyone but the Fate, the Tempters, or the Nightwings ascend is actively detrimental to the Commonwealth, either corrupting it further or literally drawing up an enemy.

If I had to guess, it ends in blood.

I liberated Hedwyn first and he was level 4 but already had his last skill.

Why bother? There are much better games released in 2017 and every single Supergiant game is extremely overrated. Their games are carried by the visuals and sound, heavily. But the game has neither the best music, visuals, story or characters of 2017, so how can it be GotY?

I originally thought the point was that Grant was getting processed and Asher wasn't able to bring himself to put him out of his misery (not that it would help.) My assumption was that we'd have a fight with a fully processed Grant who would be reinforced with a fully/partially processed Asher at a breakpoint. I personally would have written it as Grant intentionally modifying the process in an attempt to regain control, only to have the process error-correct and ignore Grant's modifications.

Narratively, having Asher commit suicide seemed rather appropriate considering their relationship; I simply thought they would be doing variations on a theme with all the Camerata eventually being done in by the Transistor and their process research.

i thought the final boss was at least a far better test of skills than the corresponding last challenges in bastion/transistor

the tazal terminals were just a bunch of enemies you had already seen before, some with their sprites sized up/down

and you went into royce with a build designed to beat the men - so bursty, single target damage with maybe something to sweep up haircuts, potentially trivializing the fight if you can chunk 1 of his stages in a turn()

not to mention his ai was pretty crap, and i don't recall any passive/upgrade functions on him

the true nightwings totally caught me off guard by tossing the ball at my charging exiles to disable them before killing them, forcing me to restart twice before i figured out their patterns

Honestly might just be some newtype, err reader understanding that connects us since when we do the same thing to Oralech in the find peace with himself and give us freedom ending he understands our true thoughts when we reach out to him so maybe we were also subconsciously reaching out to Sandalwood and re-established connection. Samefag here. I just remembered that you can grow edible berries and mushrooms so agriculture should also be possible. That you stay for several months at the Alcove means that you CAN survive without constantly wandering, too. You can build a non-nomadic society.

The more I think about it the more I realize that it's weird how no one ever mentioned making the Downside itself better.
>>
>>385408881
Because the largest "permanent" settlement needs to rebuild every few weeks because super-storms tear across the land on the regular.
>>
>>385408982
Yeah, that's what I thought at first. The book goes into how you can't stick anywhere for long because of the storms. You lived at the Alcove for "many moons" though. Volfred mentions furnishing the Alcove long ago so the implication is that stuff isn't regularly destroyed over time. The book also goes into how finding food is difficult and one has to rely on eating worms and bugs, but mushrooms and berries seem to grow just fine *inside of a wagon*. It might be that all of the stuff about harsh conditions only applies to some areas but not to others.

Hypothetically, even if you did have to constantly wander, you could create a nomadic wagon-based society powered by imps. Wagon cities. Portable farms.

>>385418970
I'll give you a C- for the attempt.

Is it true that the only fights that matter are the final rites of each cycle? Because, oddly enough, I never restarted any of those. I only restated three, and one was just because the ball bugged out and neither team could reach it.

i respect all their games for the arts and stuff, but never really liked them, even though i like RPG. still making my mind up about Pyre, too.

i'm a bit of a bonehead with games though, i like to get stuck into gameplay more than anything. Pyre has kept me pretty interested in the VN and stuff outside of Rites, so thats a good sign, however, still not sure if I really like the gameplay yet. the tower defense segment was lame and i'd like to be able to run practice games to work things out instead of just the story matches where i'm compelled to just go for the win as simply as possible.

i went with QWER controls, do you recommend WASD or think it not really matters?

Can someone explain how the story works without spoiling everything? >>
>>385424669
Aren't those like dreams, or something?
During one of her events the crystal itself drags you out after a few minutes when you weren't performing a rite.
>>
Fuck, I'm on my 2nd rite and the only ones eligible for liberation on my roster are Ti'zo, -ae, and Sir Giman.

And I'm against Fate.

I kinda want to let them win.

>>
>>385424807
Probably because Bastion was a safe well-made isometric action game that didn't try to do anything to rock the boat.
>>
>>385405006
You get a bunch of buddies.

And you don't HAVE to free anyone.
>>
>>385424807
Transistor is literally not decisive. It's widely considered better than Bastion.

Transistor was also, seriously, shitposted off of /v/ when the game came out despite the fact that if you ask /v/ now they love the game and say it's better than Bastion.
I really wouldn't put a single bit of stock in much of the """reception""" you saw to Pyre on /v/. Even if it was genuine (A good 80% was very obviously not) it hasn't been reflected in any of the games reception anywhere.
>>
>>385423887

hmm, even though i didn't figure everything out yet I think i should yeah. so far i've only needed to sprint forward and dunk.

Sprint forward and dunk becomes unviable as the CPUs increase their power level. (They take it a bit slow because getting a handle on using all the mechanics effectively takes awhile)

Try experimenting with some other stuff, if you dunk everytime you're gonna be a man down next round which is fucking scary against certain teams later on.

>>
>>385425635
Iirc, he saw his commanding officer retreat from a battle that if they retreated from, they'd be routed. He went after his commander to arrest/return him to the battlefield, but everyone assumed Gilman himself ran too. The battle was a massacre and Gilman elected for exile out of honor rather than be cast out in disgrace after a trial he was sure to lose.
>>
>>385425181
Sprinting forward and dunking can still work sometimes if you wait until there's enough room around the pyre. You can fake out the AI who's guarding it with their aura by jumping near it but not actually going for it. That makes them jump to block you but you won't collide with them and lose the ball if you aim it right. Then you can just walk into the pyre as they're still recovering.
>>
>>385425635
He's the only exile who chose to be there.
His obsession with finding honor has caused him to exile himself, follow a spineless, abusive commander, and only sink deeper into his self-loathing. Until you come along and help him realize that honor is not something to be gained, it is a promise to one's self that must be maintained.

>>
>>385425707
There are three end-game scenarios. The first is where the plan succeeds flawlessly and the revolution happens with no bloodshed. The second is where the revolution sparks fighting which the harpies take advantage of and attack during, causing the plan to work anyway but Sandalwood is sad because lives were lost. The third is where the people try to revolt but are quickly stopped, but because of their focus being diverted to rounding up the troublemakers, the harpies manage to sneak in and make their attack. In all three cases, the Commonwealth is always overthrown, the Sahrian Union is formed and they vow to never cast people into the pit.

If you want the absolute best end, the reader is freed. If you are open and kind to Oralech, and he wins the last liberation rite, he will let you take his place. If you accept, he doesn't kill himself and reforms his friendship with Sandalwood.
>>
>>385428663
You're not necessarily crippled. Hedwyn explains that you can't do the rites because they need the reader to guide them.

>>385438031
i'm kicking myself because i didn't know you are able to potentially have oralech give you his spot when he beats you so i wouldn't feel like a dick and i'd still be able to see hedwyn again
although i'd still end up damning pamitha, volfred, bertrude, and tizo to the downside
>>
>>385438579
i surmise that the scribes realize that their liberation rites are being used to fill the ranks of the commonwealth elite with types like manley

if they know, maybe that's the reason the stars are fading
>>
what do you consider the best end
assuming 3 people have to stay in the downside (assuming you do not let anyone from the other triumvirates leave) + you can stay/leave depending on oralech - then who goes where
i know that pamitha remains friends with bertrude if they both end up in the underside but not much else
maybe the best ending is to lose every single liberation right so you can just hang out with your pals + vagabond waifu forever
>>
>>385427519
Wait, does that mean ~you don't need to liberate Pamitha to make eace with the Highwing Remnants?~
>>
>>385439637
i think hedwyn makes some headway on that front with his harp gf, if you send him up
>>
>>385439637

You can even let Tamitha win and still manage peace with the Highwind Remnants.
She literally gets cucked out of her war at the last moment.
>>
>>385439339
>maybe the best ending is to lose every single liberation right so you can just hang out with your pals + vagabond waifu forever
ascending is actually a relatively bad ending for sir deluge i think, whose cowardice is not shunned in the downside

not to mention almer and _ae ending up in different places cucks them out of their cute teenage romance

you can send up manley, udmilche and the others, but their ending is pretty fitting regardless of whether they end up top or down below

Woo boy, that was good. That last match was great.

Also at first I didn't like the credits song, but then I realized it changed depending on who was ascended. That gave it bonus points for me, even if it musically is lesser than Paper Boats or Setting Sail Coming Home
>>
>>385441725
They can't be used by everyone.

Generally i don't think they are worth it.

I tried to use the "Keep aura even when holding the ball" on Jodariel, but she kept getting banished anyway.
>>
>>385439339
Hedywn gets a happy ending even staying below. His harp lover chooses to exile herself to be with him.
Only downside is he is torn up about not getting all 4 initial members ascended. And I guess he will become a demon in about a decade.

Jodariel seems to have a happy ending below, especially with Hedywn.

I wonder what Rukey's ending would be if I had kept him too. But between his crush on Pamitha and wanting to see his ma again, I didn't have it in me to keep him.

Volfred+Bertrude is a broken af combo.

>set up a sapling on the ball
>walk Volfred near it to boost auras
>get Bertrude behind/inside the aura to blast away at the enemy team
>rush the ball with a fast guy while 2-3 of them are banished

The only thing that's ever gotten through it is if they rush the ball before the sapling goes down
>>
>>385444372
You weren't trying to put it on one of the characters with the unstable aura were you?

AKA the wyrmknight, bird, bogwitch? Their aura isn't used for directly ramming enemies

>>
>>385443821
