The idea is to save them for a shortcut since many require a Mushroom to pull off.

But 8's levels feel so deliberately designed that there's only one or two places where cutting a corner is guaranteed to give you an edge. They've even blocked off shortcuts in retro stages so you have to use the "official" ones (Like Yoshi Valley's grassy sections)
