The thing that really did it for me was how the entire soundtrack was like a "best of" Jeremy Soule album. He has never done anything as good as his work on Oblivion.
I also really love the brightness and color in the game. There are too many drab and muddy looking fantasy games today.

Oblivion is way better than skyrim. The quests are way more original.

Spot on, I can still remember very clearly the first time I played oblivion. Though I can't play more than an hour or two these days without getting bored, even with a ton of mods.
