It's far and away the game with the best mechanics in the series.

Nep is a great series, despite what you may hear here on 4chan. One of my favorites to be honest.
If the "first game" you mentioned is Re;Birth1, go for it. Avoid the original, that one is bad even if you are a hardcore fan.
Start with either Re;Birth 1 or VII
