Barren open world with fetch quests just slow the game down and force you to spend more time running around delivering fanmail and taking pictures than enjoying the satisfying combat.

The story is generic and has awful pacing. The intrigue and mystery set up in the first hour or so is ruined just a short time after. And the two main characters, 9S specifically, change their positions too quickly.

Ending E when you ask for help and that vocal track kicks in is one of the best moments in video games, but the majority of the game is Platinum at it's most mediocre with the gameplay.
If GOTY was based on best moment in a video game, Nier Automata wins hands down, but I think something like Super Mario Odyssey will be more fun to play and better overall.

The boss fights were terrible. Only memorable fight was Simone, everything else was literally either a humanoid or a giant ball. The combat feels like it doesn't belong in the game considering all the enemies are slow and stupid and you're just insanely OP. Even Yorha members become useless once juggled. The difficulty levels are retarded. Wish you didn't have to play as 9S through all the previous events during Route B. It could've just cut to key moments. That was a major drag, and felt like lazy padding. A2 is a terribly written character who's "devslopment" was rushed and forced. Locations were scarce, and the only memorable ones were the out of place amusement park and the white city Adam created.

Not as good as Nier as a whole in my opinion.

Still one of the best games of the year, but GOTY would go to BoTW.
