Demon fusions is the mian basis of the franchise.
If you want to be a bitch baby, you can start with Digital Devil Saga. It is a spin off that has a team of 5 permanent part members, instead of a demon recruitment system.
Same combat system and abilities though.

It's a shame they designed the game so that picking up deathstones fucks your fusion charts every single time. Using them and getting the earlier demons back is also a pain but it's the only way to try and keep it as clean as possible

I love this game. I have the best memories of its atmosphere and I always remember fusing stuff and getting some crazy skill changes

I liked Nocturne, but I didn't like how biased it was towards the True Demon end, and how it passive aggressively insulted you for not picking that route.

IV has better dungeons (not saying much) and music, but combat is a little more broken. There's a lot more choice in your alignment though. Also the difficulty curve in IV is boned, it starts off super difficult and then levels out, but that's not a huge deal if you've played over Megaten games. It was my first SMT, and I enjoyed it. IVA has way better combat and mechanics, but the story/characters have been divisive within the community to say the least. That said, you shouldn't play IVA without playing IV.

IV (and mostly every smt game that comes after nocturne) have better gameplay and better dungeon design (although in my subjective point of view, I enjoy nocturne's dungeons more.... IV's are lacking, while nocturne's are more convoluted and irritating with and without estoma)

I can tell you what nocturne does better than IV in my opinion: atmosphere, music, graphics, story, characters

What IV does better: gameplay, dungeon crawling (but not art design), customizing stuff

To be fair, the really bad dungeons that nocturne have are nothing in comparison to grinding your ass off for the neutral ending in IV

And don't get me started on apocalypse, which throws all sense of urgency and atomsphere out of the window for some of the most retarded character interactions and fan service in the series

It improves over Nocturne in many ways. but it has a lot of downsides to it too. The combat is worse because there's a newly introduced Smirk system that is extremely overpowered and it combined with the human characters that help you that have unreliable AI mean you can be severely punished for something that is not your fault at at all. The difficulty curve isn't great either and neither is the world map, but those three things are the games only major downfalls, I'd say. It has an enjoyable story with one really excellent segment before the alignment lock, it's a little biased towards being Neutral, but not to the degree that Nocturne is to TDE. The designs are also hit or miss because they brought on guest artists so it all feels inconsistent. IV:A improves on almost everything except the story and characters, which are not terrible, but the cast is largely pretty unlikable outside of the Demons that have a role in the story. IV:A also has pretty forgettable dungeons, now that I think about it. The Demon designs are also generally better because they just had the lead artists designs the new ones and he also fixed up some of the ones introduced in IV, unfortunately some of the better designs from IV got left behind. You should definitely play IV and IV:A, though.

How easy it is to fuck up my build or demons and ruin the game?
I want to go in blind but im scared of reaching a point and realizing that i just wasted 20 hours on a useless character.

Don't worry about it, you can fuck up, but I wouldn't say you're likely to. Just make sure you invest in Strength for Demifiend and don't try to be a jack of all trades.

I really loved the gameplay, but I just wish the plot was explained a bit more. You need to do the true demon ending and do the optional dungeon to get any useful context for the story. Otherwise it's just a bunch of pyschopaths forcing you to choose sides.

There's no possible way to fuck up.

Even if you make a shit build, you can always build a good enough party to compensate.

Here's a run down of the stats:
>Strength
Increases physical attack damage. A very good stat.
>Magic
Increases effectiveness of spells. Also good, but learning new spells requires you to master magatama. Pro tip for magic builds: dismiss Pixie once you reach the park to get a healing magatama early.
>Vitality
Increases max HP. You gain HP every time you level up, so this is one doesn't have much use unless the stat is really high.
>Agility
Increases evasion and hit rate. People will disagree, but I think this is the most useful stat in the game, since dodging an attack causes the enemy to lose a turn.
>Luck
Increases crit rate. Also very useful, since you gain an extra turn when you land a crit.

If I had to give any advice for making builds, it'd be to pick three of these skills and rotate putting points between each of those three every level up. Don't try to be a jack-of-all-trades or it will bite you in the ass.

Tornado/Wind Cutter + Force Boost will carry you to the end of the game where it becomes SHITTTTTT. Seriously, don't make the same mistake as I did and transition into a STR build right around 20 base MAG or so, I'm pretty sure you also get one of the actually good Physical skills around that point too.

Same here. I've beaten all the Fiends and passed two of the bosses at the Diet Building but I still feel burnt out on it even after not playing for a month. One of my friends is ordering physical copies of Nocturne and DDS so I only booted it up to give him a quick rundown on the games. I still really enjoy the demons, worlds, and themes SMT has but I've yet to finish any of them.
