Before carebears and edgelords could self-segregate on their own servers with rules that suited them. The thing is that back in the day when pretty much everything was private servers it was very easy for the community to sort it out themselves. Because every server had different rules, there was a lot of variety in how much banter/shit talking was tolerated.

People who disliked shittalking tended to go to servers with strict shittalking rules. Meanwhile those who wanted to talk shit went to servers that where very tolerant to shittalking.
It was a good system that accommodated everyone.

At least it used to be before modern matchmaking systems crawled out of satan's buthole.

As someone who didn't grow up in a bubble of isolation as Generation Z kids do today (I actually had to go out for fun), I can tell you that some mental idiot at a bar telling people to kill themselves is pretty tame in comparision to how physical drunk people at night can be. It definitely won't get you thrown out or at least not until it gets physical.
