1. Passive coolers were a recent addition that didn't exist when I last played the game some months ago. It's good they're a thing now, HOWEVER

2. They still require research. Not a lot, but it's basically a death sentence if you get a heat wave without having them available. Given you oftentimes have more pressing priorities in tribal starts (e.g. upgrading your shitty clubs to shitty swords) this can happen something like 30% of games to instantly make you lose

3. No event should be a guaranteed death sentence. It's bad design to force the player to research something just to prevent an auto-kill.

Non-mountain bases can have invaders instantly drop in the ceiling. I don't get what the big deal with ants is.

you mean you want to be impervious to all challenge? Without infestations, there is literally zero reason not to build in mountains since then you can't get drop podded on, can't get mortared, have access to shitloads of resources, have a natural funnel to create a killzone, and have super efficient temperature control. Even with infestations, you can trick them to spawning away from your base by making sure it's lit and you have a dark, wide open space in a mountain away from your home so the hive spawns in the dark area far away from your base.

Same, I always build inside of mountains and ants are not a problem.
Here's a couple of tips
Make all hallways in your mountain base at least 5 tiles wide.
Have at least 2 doors per room for kiting them.
Have your miners build gigantic fucking hallways to nowhere in order to have a better chance of ants spawning outside of the center of your base.
Instead of crying about the game just get good man.

This game has numerous encounters that ensure you can't rely on a killzone funnel for 100% of enemies.

If you like strategy games it is. If you're not into autism simulators then it isn't. I've put about 500 hours into gameplay.

It has flaws but it's a really fun base building/resource management/crisis management game.

It's sorta fun but not enough to hold my interests or complete any start. Always got bored and gave up or restarted. I really enjoy DF as well so I thought this would be an easy buy for me but I regret it. Pirate it and if after 10 or more hours you're still enjoying it consider buying.
