Splatoon 2

I really hope ARMS doesn't die though. It's so much better than it deserves to be and I unironically want to see it reach eSports level popularity

EVO Japan will be its make or break
>>
>>385273018
What? Splatoon is actually fun. ARMS is a mini game you play for 10 minutes then get bored.
>>
>>385273136

ARMS is the only reason I'm hyped for EVO japan. Even more than the greater ARMS exposure, their tourneys use customs. I've liked the high level play I 've seen in some tourneys so far but get a bit annoyed that it's default only. I think doing custom tourneys will build more interest too.

Arms was a fantastic concept that was barebones as hell. That said though I hope Nintendo comes through on their promise of new free content. Also its one of those games that could seriously benefit from an arcade version.

I know this is bait but I have to ask, what qualifies as a fighting game? Why isn't Smash a fighting game? Why isn't Arms? Don't both allow you to fight 1v1 in a stage just like other fighters? I'm not really well versed in the FGC but I'm curious whether there's a reason for this mentality or it's just autism.

Hopefully I'm not opening a can of worms here, but I think ARMS is way more of a fighting game than Smash is. Don't get me wrong: I have nothing but respect for pro Smash players and I couldn't get a stock off of any of them if I tried, but Smash is very much just a party game. To me, the intent of Smash Bros is to have 4 characters (or 8 in Sm4sh) duking it out on a bunch of crazy stages with random hazards and item drops that make it so you can never determine which player will end up winning. In the case of ARMS, while you can have 4 players fighting each other as individuals or 2v2 teams, it seems designed around 1v1 battles in stages that don't allow for random chance to determine who wins

As a prominent member of the ARMS """""community""""" it died because the interest just isn't there. That's really all there is to it.

It's weird, the sales figures point to a booming online scene and crazy amount of players, but in ranked I play the same 5 people using the same 2 strategies constantly and it's unfun. The online Discord is full of people with their heads up their asses who would rather brag about online wins and post their ranks than actually enter a tournament.

Offline tournaments all over the country are dead. The local near me, they can't even get people to enter a FREE bracket. Which is fine, not every game needs to be competitive! But it's really weird to see such big sales figures and see almost nothing coming out the other end.

Personally I think the game is incredibly fun, but few people seem to agree with me and the other people that tend to be insufferable. It sucks.

I'm working with a big streamer to put together online tournaments leading up to EVO Japan now. I hope something comes of it but I'm not optimistic.
>>
because nintendo won't let me buy a switch
>>
>>385274296
It's sold about 1.1 million units anyways. ARMS is here to stay.
>>
>>385283934
I'm one of the shitters who wants to see this game take off competitively, yet won't really take action to join the "scene" or create one near me if it doesn't exist yet. Quick question: is there a consensus on whether characters will be allowed to have custom ARMS loadouts in competitive play? I'm a Twintelle main online because I'm a fan of her beautiful black ass and I like her being able to slow down the enemy's attacks, but I don't like her default ARMS at all outside the Chilla
>>
>>385282952
Only problem is that almost none of them were advertised well.
>>
>>385284278

Do you have any experience with fighting games? Don't mean to be condescending, I'm honestly asking because most people that do, including the game's best players, are pointing toward default ARMS, but people new to competition want customs.

Both have risks, but I (and most tourney organizers) lean default. The problem with custom ARMS is that it becomes an optimization race, where the same 2-3 characters play the same 6-8 ARMS.

Of course, default has the risk of getting stale really easily and locking out some characters anyway (Helix) but I think it's the lesser of two evils. I just think the game has way more depth with defaults.
>>
>>385283934

Which discord are you a part of, I'm in oen that's pretty active and with folks who go to tourneys like Cat Fight.

It's really strange how a game that was advertised well, sold well and had good reviews has such a tiny community. The game is huge in japan maybe EVO will change things.
>>
>>385284278
>Quick question: is there a consensus on whether characters will be allowed to have custom ARMS loadouts

It's either all or none. I'm inclined to agree with Sol that defaults or some compromise between customs and defaults is best. Pure customs just means the characters with the best movement options (Ribbon and Helix until they fix the vertical camera/aiming) with the best arms and 2 sets that counter those arms' counters.
>>
>>385284663
Not that anon, but the only discord I'm on is le ebin reddit Boogeyman one. Which one are you using anon, I'd like to see what cat fight has to say after watching him body Sol in that exhibition match the other day.
>>
>>385284663

The main one, I think? I never post in it, though. I don't like anyone in there.

The guys who actually go to events (Cat Fight, Sol, Coney) are cool. The ones that don't, the online warriors, are fucking awful.
>>
>>385283934
Not everyone who bought this game plays it competitively though.

I bet most people play in Party Mode.
>>
>>385284516

I've been seeing the arguments and while I do see the point to be made about custom arms stagnating the scene, I feel like defaults only also forces it's own metas. Since Sol won 2GGC with Springman everyone wants to run him in defaults. That tourney at SDCC had friggin 3 springmen. The only 3 characters really used the whole thing were springman and Ribbon girl I can only recall one Mechanica main. The only time the other characters were used were as secondaries and rarely did it ever even come to that.

Sol suggested a default plus one which would be good but part of me would rather the risk of the optimization race than only having springmen tourneys and never seeing Helix who is an absolute joy to watch when used correctly.
>>
>>385284897

Yeah obviously, competitive players are a super small minority. But with 1 million in sales, I expected locals to maybe get 20-30 entrants at the start of the game.

We couldn't even get 8.
>>
>>385284516
Technically yes, but I'm mostly new to this. I went in super hard with Street Fighter V and found myself being pretty kinda sorta good at it, but it's illegal to like that game

Isn't EVO Japan or Japan in general going with customs as far as competitive is concerned? I remember hearing something along those lines when ARMS was still being talked about in gaming news.

In the end, I don't really mind playing with default ARMS. The waifufag part of me will be incredibly sad I can't comfortably rep Twintelle, but as far as competing goes, I have zero issues playing a top tier speedy grab spammer

https://discord.gg/549Jy it's pretty cool, Cat fight, swillo, Gore a lot of really good players in their discussing the game and some other games too.
>>
>>385284961

To be fair, that event didn't exactly have the best players. ZERK is a fraud and everyone else was pretty much picked off the street. Coney was on commentary but probably would've gotten 2nd if he entered.

But you're right, I wouldn't disagree to 2 defaults and 1 custom. The problem is that pretty much every custom loadout is almost always the same, so enforcing some standardization would be fine.

Either way though, game's dead. So I don't see it happening.
>>
>>385285070

Yea japan is customs. Looking forward to it.
>>
>>385285070

I'm not sure if that's confirmed yet, but maybe! I'd assume it would be since it's probably being shilled in by Nintendo and I think Yabuki is big on custom ARMS.

They basically will REQUIRE Nintendo's help for it though, since they'll need all ARMS unlocked on a ton of different setups.
>>
>>385285192

I thought Neru was actually pretty good, or maybe the excitement of seeing a semi decent MEchanica is clouding my judgment.
>>
>>385285368
Even with Nintendo's help, would having the "plus" versions of certain ARMS due to the random nature of unlocking them be detrimental to the game's competitive scene? I just find this aspect of the game to be mind boggling considering Nintendo wanted ARMS to be this big eSports game instead of Smash's party game nature being fucked with in order to make it viable to play/watch at high levels

>>
>>385286976
It worked phenomenally for Splatoon, so there was a reasonable chance it could have happened again with ARMS. I feel the difference is that Splatoon was just so revolutionary for the online shooter genre while ARMS isn't really turning heads in the FGC. That's also ignoring the fact that shooters are by and large more popular and easier to get into than fighting games
>>
>>385287189

I think it's largely the genre. That kind of thing works in a shooting game because the core is so simplistic and the genre is incredibly popular. Splatoon also worked because the game is ridiculously easy to play with a pretty simple learning curve.

Fighting games however are a much more niche genre and the community is a lot less receptive to attempts to revolutionize the genre. But even despite that the game is ridiculously hard to git gud at for the common nintendo game player. Splatoon had the right level of difficult for how it was trying to change the game.

ARMS is simply too difficult in a field full of anal people on a console people don't expect games with that steep of a learning curve to be on. Despite all of that it sold well so we at least have that, but in terms of community building it seemed to die because it was too hard to keep up with.
>>
>>385288086
I find that to be a goddamn shame after the trailer revealing the Switch made it seem like Nintendo was actively trying to make the console appeal heavily to the type of audience who would be big into eSports
>>
>>385286019

>>
>>385283934

>the sales figures point to a booming online scene and crazy amount of players
No, they don't, stop committing this fallacy. Sales figures point to an effective marketing strategy at most, they tell you nothing about how active the playerbase is afterwards. Street Fighter V had worse initial sales than ARMS but it more than makes up for it with its active, passionate community. While not a fighting game, Monster Hunter Generations didn't manage to sell more than a million, yet you'd be hard pressed to see anyone call the game dead. Given the lack of interest, I'm willing to bet 95% of ARMS buyers shelved the game after the first week, but Nintendo doesn't care since the hard numbers are there and they know investors/drones are going to eat this shit up.

>>
>Doesn't take more than a minute to get players online, both party and ranked

> Sold 1,2 million units in 2 weeks even though fighting games are on a huge decline and even though it's a brand new IP

I genuinely don't understand what is wrong with this board

Source for what? Or does nu-/v/ require you to source your opinions now?
>>
I'm getting a switch next month. Really hope I can actually play people in this game at the time.

Both of those games also have had years to develop their name. ARMS literally came out a month ago.

If you can find people right now after Splatoon 2 just hit and is at it's apex in the media and before ARMS starts actualy rolling out new characters and content then you can be pretty safe there will still be people to play
>>
>>385289910
Don't. Online became a fucking ghost town after Splatoon 2 came out.

t. own both
>>
>>385290003
*doesn't actually own a switch

>They only seem to make new IPs when they run out of characters for Smash.

As of late a lot of it is unfortunately pretty much Assist Trophy material.
>>
>>385290003

Well, I'm also getting Splatoon 2 so it's not like it'd be the end of the world if what you say is true. I'd prefer it if >>385289997 is more accurate, naturally.

ARMS has like 1.5 million owners after just a month. You will never EVER struggle to find players
>>
>>385290195
>1.2 million sales in 2 weeks
>lack of interest

Lol. But sure, lets pretend that there's still interest in Tekken "struggled to sell half a million" 7

I think some clarification needs to be made.

People have bought the game

People are playing the game

A community exists for the game

The thing is the community isn't as big as people thought it would be. and communities always have time to grow

Wow that's a nice fanfic you wrote

>The thing is the community isn't as big as people thought it would be

The franchise is literally a month old

"Anedoctal evidence that goes against the very concept of reason" shouldn't be taken even with a truckload of salt.

Like, come on, it's a multiplayer game on a content-starved Nintendo console that came out last month, you seriously for a second will believe that "it's dead" because a faceless internet voice told you about how a local tournament didn't want to run a game?
>>
Anyone know which regions actually have locals? I don't have a Switch yet, and probably won't for a while, but I love fighting games and would love to get invested if there was a scene available.
