The page where troll romance was explained at length was introduced to the reader as "punishment" for being rude to the narrator. Then, like everything else in the comic before and after that point, the concept of troll romance got referenced in other contexts and eventually became less and less played-for-laughs-only and just became part of plot relevant shit you ought to know, since these are all teenaged characters we're dealing with. Of course, the terrible parts of the fandom had gone crazy with the concept long before the point any real shipping hints had been laid out in the comic itself.
