Its a mixed bag really. The story maps are all very solid, mechanics are a mix between 1 and 4's system with weapon mastery retruning but you power up your skills and spells by spending mana. The chara world is back but this time its a fun gameboard to explore instead of being a shitty item world knock off. Speaking of which, the item world has changed too. It requires you to kill everything on the floor to level up your items now.

Statistician innocents and the last map in Cave of Ordeals. If you're playing anything but the PS2 version and you unlocked Etna mode without using the title screen code, then last map of CoO in Etna mode is the best grinding spot.

That being said, first game has too few options for grinding and is the roughest of all the series.

Its really not too bad once you get a decent number of them built up. And Baal himself is fairly easy to cheese as you can always have a unit hold him up every turn.

Gotta farm Statisticans. Just plain leveling isn't all that terrible once you get set up. The problem is if you want to maximise a character you still need to reincarnate over and over until their combined level is above 188k for the max stat bonus, which will still take like 20-25h if you are going about it efficiently even with the best set up.
Granted there is nothing that even remotely requires that kind of grind but optimizing a character is a serious time investment in the first game, never mind you will still have to spend a shitload of time in the item world to perfect your gear.

It does. If you have a character equip two or more pieces of gear with the same rarity number, it gives you a boost in stats.

I believe equipping stuff with the exact same rarity gives all your equipment a bonus

In D1-4 you get a percentual bonus modifier if your equipment has the same rarity so ideally you want to reset until you get Rarity 0 for all your endgame stuff since some rewards like the Baal Sword come with that. In D5 rarity doesn't matter at all anymore, not even whether an item is normal, rare, or legendary, since you can slowly upgrade your rarity through the item world.

Depends on how strong you are going into it. If you don't have to grind you can probably knock it out in an afternoon, it's not all that long. Definitely worth playing through though.
Also in case you don't know, the postgame in Disgaea games usually continues the story so if you just skip it you will miss out on quite a bit of the main plot.

One thing I'd like to ask before going off. Is the postgame specifically about stopping before the last map or can you continue the game after beating the last level. Tying into that, how does Etna mode fall into the whole end-game thing? I keep the levels (so I ideally don't crap on Baal before that to not make it a joke) but lose some characters whom I can't get back for the eventual Baal confrontation?

The way post-game works in the first two game is you have to do the optional maps before the last boss for the story. Starting with D3 post-game is a separate "area" you get access to once you beat the main story.

In Etna mode you keep your levels and gear, but lose Laharl and every story character save for Etna (though you recruit Flonne later and she also keeps the levels she had in your party). Baal, Priere and Marjoly fights in Etna Mode count as separate things. Story enemies and difficulty in Etna Mode ramp up quickly, and if you unlocked it from the main story enemy levels start from 100.
