Return it to blizzard right now and whatever you do, DO NOT COPY THAT FLOPPY
>>
>>385218582
I've never understood the whole thing with this. Did Blizzard seriously not keep a fucking copy of the original source code? It literally existed only on a disc that got lost?

They probably did have the source code.
They just dont want the public having that source code.

Good point, senpai. Explain this for autists though: what exactly can you do with the source code that you can't do by just modding the game and accessing the code that already freely exists?
>>
>>385219131
Besides simple stuff like art changes, modding a game requires changing the code.

You can either reverse engineer it with hex editing and shit which will take you a very long time, or use the source code and makes changes to things in no time at all.
>>
>>385219074
still not worth it imo

This retard should have just made a copy of the disc, given it back to them, and then released the code a year later through some anonymous source. What a fucking cocksucker.

no, of course it wasn't worth it. but he didn't just get $40.

Probably some dev got it home and forgot about it. Since they've made the remake and 1 patch recentrly, I assume they have the source code, they just don't want it public so others won't be able to export the remake files and use them on modified original client or something.
>>
>>385221151
The code is not his. He was in possesion of disk, but that doesn't make him the copyright holder. Even if he sold the disk, he sold it without the approval of copyright holder, which is ActiBlizzard

Oh yeah, he just happened to find the gold master source code in the middle of a random bundle that he bought on ebay. and the owner's parents unknowingly sold it.

Pardon me if this is a dumb question, but assuming he wanted to upload it somewhere anonymously how could he have done so in a reasonable manner? If blizzard really wanted to track his ass down, they could/would do it, right?

>what exactly can you do with the source code that you can't do by just modding the game and accessing the code that already freely exists?
Did you even once in you life tried to understand some disassembled / decompiled code with machine generated labels / function names etc.?
Now compare with being able to read the original dev commented source.
>>
Who gives a fuck what he does with it? Are you seriously clamoring for fucking vanilla Starcraft (not even Brood War) mods/the engine? What the fuck would ANYBODY do with that? The only thing we'd see are like 50 "Starcraft: Rebalanced" mods and maybe one or two platformers as a proof of concept tech demo. People acting like this is some sort of major sin that the guy didn't want to get fucked in the ass in jail for 20 years just to appease some retards on the Internet is insane.

0 you fucking idiot, it's their goddamn property. If I steal a million dollars from a bank, put it in a briefcase then sell it to you for 40 dollars at a garage sale the court won't say "Well he bought it for 40 dollars at some fucking garage sale, the money is clearly his".
>>

>Anonymous dropbox
>Awarded internet cred

The guy got an all expenses paid trip to blizzcon.

That's more than he would have gotten from an anonymous leak.
>>
>>385224382
Stealing is way different than finding something randomly. The disc wasn't stolen as far as we know. It would be like finding a painting worth millions that no one is looking for at a garage sale. Would the artist be entitled to his painting even though it was never stolen?
>>
>>385224631
he probably could've gotten at least one thousand dollars if he wasn't retarded

If I had the choice between getting a free vacation and knowing that I released the source code to the shitty non-Brood War version of Starcraft and never being able to tell anybody about it at risk of getting found out and being sued up the ass, I'd choose the vacation over anything else.
>>
>>385223092

>>
>>385224819
Hi blizzard
>>
>>385224757
Yes because it obviously was fucking stolen; if you're trusting somebody with the Starcraft GOLD SOURCE CODE, I think it's pretty clear that they were pretty high up the corporate ladder and didn't want the code to end up in a garage sale.
If Vincent Van Gogh (Blizzard) had a painting (Starcraft Source Code) hanging up in his house (Blizzard's headquarters), went to sleep, woke up to find it missing (stolen), then twenty years later heard that painting was at a garage sale for 20$, it still fucking belongs to Van Gogh, it doesn't matter how many times it was exchanged.

That's exactly what the first-sale doctrine protects. He'd be allowed to sell the disk regardless of who owns the copyright of it's contents. He's just not allowed to release the code. But he wouldn't be liable if the person he sold it to released it.
>>
>this all happens right before a big Starcraft rerelease

Exactly you get it.

If you'd leak the source code online people talk about it for 1 week. It would get into news sites and reddit front page. And then everyone would move on.

If you'd sell it you'd make some good money and go on holiday 2-3 times.

But if you'd do something like proving you have it and then smashing it on livestream you'd become a legend. People would talk about it for decades to come. Every time a Zelda thread gets made it would get mentioned by at least someone.
