I REALLY wanted to like the series. I could give or take the MC. The dialogue, the tedium, the "sexiness" really killed any small interest I had in the series. Tragic, really, since I kept hearing nothing but praise for the (first) game, the sequel did nothing to improve my opinion either.

The game becomes a slog very shortly into the first chapter, style over substance was not a good strategy with pretty much ALL of these brawlers. The Arkham games put the combat to shame and there's just no saving the story.

No it doesn't. Arkham's combat is mainly designed around reading prompts and signs and pressing the right button and input to execute proper counters and attacks. It's extremely fluid and engaging, but its also very grounded and scripted and doesn't really expand dynamically as the game progresses.

Bayonetta's combat is designed more around a sense of freedom with being able to manipulate enemies around which lends itself to letting players be more creative with their executions. Its very substance is being stylish, and there's a shit ton of strategy to discover in the game, but most players who aren't very fond of these types of action games simply turn their brains off and button mash, and usually get punished for it.

While I do agree the combat is better than bamham it doesn't really give you a lotta freedom. Bayo is one of the most button mashy action games. Your top priority is ALWAYS getting off a wicked weave, wich has you memorising 2 or 4 combos and mashing them to death. Take God Hand for instance, where it's more about positioning and choosing what attack you'll land on a counter hit, or Devil May Cry where the pre set combos don't matter much and you gotta rely more on your directional moves and when to cancel them
