This is some genius business strategy if you think about it. Keep your supply low because the loyalty of your fanbase is strong. Then slowly release games. Because there's gaps between their big releases, the fanbase would inevitably purchase whatever game that is available, if only to fill the downtime until the next big hit. It's a genius tactic.

This way, Nintendo now keeps demand, supply, and customer loyalty in all their control. This can all come crumbling down if the consumer becomes wise or tired of waiting, but Nintendo has a very rare case where their fanbase will wait for eons. They must be sitting pretty good without having to make any effort. The downside to this all is that Nintendo's success lies solely on this one fanbase. That's why they're trying to maximize profits on the most loyal of their fans with DLC and such. It's schemy af, but I'll keep watching to see how this plays out later.

I'm worried those numbers aren't accurate. Nintendo has the nasty habit of counting units shipped as units sold. This is evident when you see that the switch version of Breath of the Wild was "selling" more than the system was for a few weeks after launch.

There is also the worry of this being a WiiU 2 since we haven't got to the holiday season yet, it may sell a few more then fall flat.

No console has ever had a year 1 launch like this. I remember when I got my snes I was happy to play smw for a year cause it looked so damn pretty.
