Duke Nukem was originally supposed to be redesigned as African American in Duke Nukem 3D, but he was then reverted back to white American after the marketing research team ended up in conclusion that Duke's habit of forcing himself on white women and eating fried chicken could be seen as racist stereotype.

Similar incident happened during the production of Shadow Warrior (1997): The designing team behind the overall look and aesthetic of the game had already designed most of the graphics and sprites as "urban". The game was originally supposed to be set in near future Detroit where the only sapient African American would rise against his own brothers, hence the name "Shadow Warrior". Again, the marketing research team stepped in and informed this would be seen inappropriately racist, even in the relaxed atmosphere of the 90s.
3D Realms, the team behind the game, had to quickly change the graphics and the story of the game, weeks before the deadline. There wasn't enough time to draw new sprites and textures, so they reused the graphics that were originally supposed to be in then unreleased Duke Nukem expansion that was going to be set in Asia, Duke Nukem 3D: Have a Rice Day.
