Yes, that has always been the fate of games that attempt to break the mold in a safe manner. You just invite hipsters. Undertale doesn't take risks at any point, nor is it that impressive in storytelling or design. It does however manage to garner a lot of oohs and aahs from "normies". "Oh wow this is so clever". It's a game filled with gimmicks, admittedly quite clever gimmicks, but gimmicks nonetheless.
