People were expecting another tacticool anime turn based game game, they set themselves up to fail, even if the game were flawless (which it isn't btw) it would still have been disliked because, again, it still wouldn't have been a tacticool anime turn based game.

It is like if Warcraft 4 got announced, but they made it a 1st person shooter instead of the RTS with heroes. People are simply going to dislike it because it isn't "what it was supposed to be".

Aside from that I don't even understand why people liked valkyria. If you want strategy there are so SO much better games than VC. If you want an anime game with melodramatic anime plot there are better games to be had too. If you just want anime waifus there are better games. If you want the anime aesthetic there are better games. It seemed to sell on being the only game that offered all of those things together, albeit a very poor attempt when looked at individually.

I dunno man, a lot of their anime is about war and feature guns. The slice of life series are still the more popular and larger section of the market though I suppose.

They started development before the PC and PS4 ports came along and clearly showed that people wanted more of what VC1 offered. Taking the IP and spinning it off into a more action RPG-ish direction makes sense when you consider the state of the franchise 3-4 years ago, not so much when you look at where it is today.

Could I enjoy Revolution if I haven't played any Valkyria game yet?

The unique visual style, story/characters, and core mechanics (ie how fun the gameplay was when you didn't know how easy it was to break) carried the first game, yeah. The second game improved things like class balance but was a massive step back in so many other ways that it didn't matter. Never played VC3 because no official localization but from what I gathered it took most of the improvements 2 made and unfucked what it could of what 2 regressed on.

The game was bad, it's just that people gobble up normie-tier anime shit like it's going out fashion. Nobody but the fans could have told you what the Tales series was a couple of years ago, since berseria though everyone and there mom seems to now about it. Go onto Netflix or any other streaming service right now, and have a look at the surprisingly large selection of normie anime, that is to say anime that largely is palatable to western tastes without too muc, if any, "weird Japanese shit". Stuff like attack on titan. Persona 5 is another game that falls into this, nobody but fans and people really into vidya would have known about that series, but now fucking everyone is into that shit.

It's a pretty meh game even without it being a let down if you like the Chronicles games.

The best way to describe it would be like if they tried to make a Dynasty Warriors game that attempted to emulate turn based gameplay by having you pick attacks off a menu that pauses the action. As a whole the combat isn't very satisfying and feels like it's a mishmash of them trying to make an action game, but still include elements the series has that simply don't mesh well with the action game format.

The combat is at it's strongest with the fights against Brunhilde (pic related) because they necessitate you time grenades/counter spells to interrupt her actions, so her fights are where the combat most "comes together" but even there it's just not very interesting.

The story and characters are neat but nothing exceptional. The setting might be pretty cool (wartorn magical-Europe) if you haven't played the previous Valkyrias, but if you have then it's basically just the VC setting with more magic.

Also there are SO MANY FUCKING CUTSCENES and they are very long. The game is far, far more cutscene than gameplay. You get 30 minute missions followed by 30m - 1hrs of cutscene after cutscene.

I really wouldn't recommend Revolution to anyone unless they really have a thing for middling JRPGs (like I do). It's not offensively bad, but it's not got much going for it either.

Except Brunhildes tits. Those are amazing. I can not express enough how much I love her tits.

IIRC the turn-based elements were tacked on after a demo was released (with the VC1 remaster, I think?) since reception to the purely ARPG system was pretty negative. Kinda like what they did with FFXV, come to think of it.

MonsterQuest does both. Atelier games have all the cute waifu material you will ever need (also the stories are pretty good and the gameplay isn't half bad either). There are at least two dozen VN's that do very well on the "lewd waifu" front.

Wew lad, has it ever occurred to you that English VAs are shit because they get paid shit as there is basically no demand for them outside of shitty games and anime dubs? There are a handful of good English VAs (Troy Baker for instance, whose voice is in fucking everything you ever played) but they usually only lend their voices to big titles. Even if smaller titles manage to net a good English VA for the dub, they won't have one for all the characters.
Japan on the other hand has a massive demand for voice acting, it is an extremely competitive world and they get paid a shitton.
You don't even need to understand the language to understand the emotions being conveyed by the VA, something that is nearly always done excellently by Japanese and nearly always horrendously by English.

In short the anglosphere is invested in acting, not voice acting. The reverse is true for Japan.
