My fondest memory of this game was accidentally drinking milk that went really... realllly bad.

When i started the game i only planned to play for a few minutes, and got a milk ready to drink.
Got so into it i think i completely forgot about the milk.

Parts of it were shitty, but I really appreciate that you were exploring this big dumb castle from top to bottom. DMC3 might have better combat but you just kind of go from one gray room to the next fighting monsters until the doors open up.

Kinda yeah, but I will never not argue this. DMC3 took the juggling mechanics found on scarecrows and like 1 other enemy, cranked that shit to 11 and made it the sole focus of the combat. Attacks no longer feel powerful because you're pin-needling enemies to death now. Not to mention they massively toned down the aggressiveness of enemies in comparison to DMC1 so that you have the time to do those sicknasty combos.

1 is kind of janky. 2 is the most refined in both SP and MP, as well as having some of the best levels. 3 is still great, but it was on the tail end of the generation and didn't seem to leave as much of an impression as its predecessor, probably at least partially due to leaning too hard on the goofy humor.

I only wish the ghosts were more aggressive. Some of the spooks get kind of lame when you realize you have to run up to their face and fish out their attack animation if you want to deal any real damage since they're way too slow to reach you from their side of the room. And then they had assholes like the ghost monks that would walk into the wall and refuse to come out while shooting projectiles at you.

Me and a friend loved the racing game on this. I loved countering the spear from Scorpion with Raiden. He eventually stopped and we teamed up against the AI. He'd spear and pull them right into my lightning.

That's probably the most "stupid bullshit" the game throws at you for a while, up until the 4th area nothing like that happens again, and even then it's more natural. I would give it another go if you like the town building stuff. the sequel is full of moments like that

I don't really like the revamped weapon upgrade system and the stamina system in 2. And the parry/slash mechanics made killing mooks pretty trivial.

But unlocking moves and pulling off combos and juggles were super satisfying. And collecting swords and getting the different endings were pretty fun.
