How's your game coming along anon?
tfw I made Snake in Python yesterday.
I cannot for the life of me beat Mike Tyson in Punch Out.
What's the ideal max velocity for the player in a first person shooter?
It's not.
Im alright with java but all I can still do is just mobile tier shit.
Holy shit, I did FUCKING NOTHING all day and I learned literally nothing about C coding today.

Eh. Art is going well.

wouldn't even pirate
>>385178901
Good, cause it's free~
Just trying to get an idea on how to make stuff happen, so I'm OK with it being kinda garbage pixel art.
I am the King of Games. Come at me.

What's the best program to make shit on C++
There's like 20 different visual studios
>>385180457
VIM
>>385177776
Crap. I've given up on it and just work on making tiny silly games instead in the hopes that in 6 months to a year I will improve enough to continue.
>>385177776
Gave up on it, maybe I'll turn the story into a short novel or some shit since it won't get out of my system otherwise.
>>385180857
Never heard of it, what's it like
>>385180457
Visual Studio 2017 and SDL2.
Don't fall for the engine meme unless your game is 3D.
>>385177873
Now make Python in Snake.
>>385177776
/v/ is filled with idea guys OP. Let alone people who can program, draw/model or make music.
>>385181368
Or you can just make it a visual novel
People love those these days
>want to make game
>remember I have to make all assets myself
>have no clue how to start/do any of them
Why are games difficult to make, /v/? Is cuz I'm a brainlet?
>>385181682
No, it's because you have crippling depression. Cheer up.

The basics of vim are pretty easy t b h. When you start getting into commands and vundle n' shit the possibilities become endless which gets pretty crazy.
Personally I like pretty much anything by jetbrains, they make pretty good shit.
Is it viable to use RPG Maker if I just want to focus on the Sprite movement parts as an investigation game and make the "RPG" section into interrogations style?

>>385182309
>i can't into art so my game will be trash might as well die now
>there are no artists worth a damn out there so whatever might as well die nowYou are aware that, you know, games are getting made, and they pretty much always have artists on their team, right?
>tfw no artist and ideas guy to make a 3-man team with
>>385182460
>RPGMaker
Please, anything but that. You know why it's so easy to tell that a game is made in it? They're all the fucking same, it's an extremely restrictive engine.
If you must use an engine and if you're doing 2D, check out Godot. Godot 3's GDNative will fix all of the performance problems of using GDScript (TotallyNotPython). Unity isn't very well suited for 2D.
>>385182617
>tfw talented ideas guy in a sea of mediocre talent but no way to distinguish myself
I want to get back to devving, but I just don't know what to make. All of my ideas amount to little more than 'its like X but with Y', and that makes it hard for me to really commit to anything.
Guess I'll just keep drawfagging until I come up with a fun concept.
>>385180857
>recommends vim
>posts stallman
>>385182731
>no way to distinguish yourself
Anon, if you really think thatchances are you're mediocre talent.
Slowly. It's an otome game so I'm trying to write the script before I get in-depth with the coding and art and everything. The problem is that I can't decide if I should write the main plot or the boys' subplots first.
>>385182673
Nice recommendation I'll give it a shot
making a pixel shit game with my bro because neither of us give two shits about art or grafix
it has a killer soundtrack made in Famitracker, bonus stages + collectibles (sorta like sonic games with emeralds), a secret stage, sound test, boss rush, multiple difficulties, cheat codes
the one thing we're struggling with is color blind mode...color is a main game mechanic and we can't think of ways to not use it
hopefully going to release it in October with or without color blind mode
All i do for developing games is come up with an interesting sounding name for a game, come up with a story for it, and wrap it around some simple gameplay.
Anybody want to make a team project here and now?
I'm both an ideas guy and somewhat decent programmer
But i suck at organizing, priority decisions and other assets

Pretty good, I'm going on vacation in a couple weeks so I"ll be able to devote more time to it.
Not good. I haven't started, have no ideas, no real programming knowledge, no artistic skills, no musical skills.
>>385183391
Nice animations!
I would seriously suggest you stop caring about spoiling people and just post as much as you have. For your own good, really, the more eyes on something you have the more feedback you can get. Most people on /v/ don't check game dev threads, I can promise you there will be a ton of people that didn't see any of it once you're thinking of releasing it.
What's the best language to make a game in /v/?
C++? Java? Python?
>>385183391
Neat? What's the plot of your game? I'm very interested

>too depressed to start practicing and learning again
>>385184037
Thats okay, it isnt for everyone. And those burgers wont flip themselves
>>385183964
C/C++ are industry standard because of efficiency, they're about as "close to the machine" as you can get while still having maintainable code.
Python? No. Python should never be used in such performance-critical areas like video games.
>>385184037
It's easier to pick up again if you have a goal in mind. Flipping through CS books is boring as shit, just start making cool shit and you'll have sufficient motivation.

Procrastinating on learning C++. I want my own nene engine.
>>385184654
Just learn C, no point in learning C++ until you have a lot of experience imo.
>>385184837

Gross. How do you deal with this in C?
>>385177776
Not at all, I work for a tech company and earn enough money to let other people make games for me.
>>385184992

Everything I was doing with inheritance when I started my engine I was able to replace with a single class, an enum type value, and lookup tables

>>385183391
Looks pretty neato anon, nice animations, and the menus remind me of the ones from Superstar Saga
>>385184326
It really depends on the complexity of your game, ram is pretty fucking cheap these days. I'm no Python guru but I'm pretty sure there's gotta be some halfway decent graphics library you could make something simple with.
I actually think starting with some kind of higher level language is a great way to learn. Performance can wait until later definitely. If you get far enough into making a game that you need to worry about performance, you should have a much better idea of what you're doing so porting it to another language shouldn't be that bad.
>>385185165
Looks like a fun way to pass the time anon, keep it up!
>>385184037
>>went to school for CS
>>got bachelor's
>>couldn't get job
If you can't get a job in CS in an age where everything is digitalized and CS is needed more than ever then you really fucked up, son.
>>385185382
>ram is pretty fucking cheap these days
That doesn't mean it's a signal to use more than what's necessary.
We use lots of RAM now because CPUs can handle multitasking far better than 20 years ago. If you're game developer, you're also a software developer, and that means not being an idiot with the consumer's system's resources.
>>385184037
any information you learned in school was useless anyway
go write a passion project and learn on your own.
>want to program
>all code is on linux partition
>don't want to reboot
fuck

>want to work on game while out of the house

>>385186112
This is why I'm glad I'm working with Ren'py.
So I am currently at a concept stage with only one model on a different computer.A modern version of Berzerk
It's a stealth FPS with interconnected levels but mostly open with the linear trait of going from Point A to Point B to finish levels. What I am currently trying to do is think of levels that could tie into the overall gameplay and make sense forrobots contracting a virus called "Berzerk" and taking over the world
>>385185745
I mean you're not wrong, but if you're just starting out learning how to program and develop games, optimizing performance shouldn't be your first concern. Learning good fundamentals is way more important, because you can actually make shit. Even if it runs poorly, you still have something to work with and then you can learn how to write better optimized code.
Trying to write well optimized code on your first try is like trying to learn to be a race car driver before you know how to operate a clutch.
Be honest, would you play Nene Quest?
Thinkinf about it right now. Have a good plot but want to get my experience by making some small simple games first. Problem isI have no fucking clue how to make any assets and only know the most basic forms of java language.
Could use some advice. Should I go to college and learn ho to make asset or should I just use use some online youtube tutorial or some shit? Got a REALLY good idea that I like for a game and I want to strive towards
>>385181530
Why SDL2 instead of SFML or whatever the correct acronym is?
>>385186386
think of an asset to make and make it
make a sprite of a stick figure. then make some trees or some shit
it's way more important to just try to make stuff than worrying about what courses to take or what books to read
>>385184654
>>385184837
Shallow but wide inheritance and STL make all the headaches C++ can bring very worthwhile in the end.
