I kinda feel the same way. It's pretty much the most solid, but X2 improved upon it a lot. I tend to prefer either X2 or X3 to X1, but I would say X1 is the best. Just not the best it could be.

Most of the X games are kind of a mess that way. The Zero games had a much better, shorter run. That only makes me want to see a team that knows what they're doing try to remake the X series and not only make a better X1, but go farther than X2 or X3 did, taking with it the decent stuff that X4-X8 introduced.

One thing that X1 did the best is a strong, but minimalist story. Very open-shut complete arc told less through text and dialogue and more through playing, from the first unwinnable fight with Vile to the final showdown with Sigma. It was a good start to introducing the series and it's main character, something X2 took a step back with, but X2 is pure cool to me.
