The thing is, the scene only worked under specific circumstances:
1) You weren't spoiled about the game and approached it as a generic TPS
2) You were in a mindset of "just do what the mission objective tells me to do" and didn't notice that they were civilians

The scene really got me, but I understand that it didn't work at all for many.

If you haven't played Kek Ops get the PC version. There is a lot of model detail and environment detail that you don't get in the 360 version and it really heightens the experience.

I encountered this game before the memes started, and I think the memes ruined it.

I live down the street by the only rental place in town and I used my free birthday coupon on this game. Figured it'd be a solid Call of Duty knockoff to veg out too. Didn't expect it to be something more. I posted online about it alot and got my friends to check it out and they liked it.

The game isn't making you feel guilty for launching the phosphorous, it's demonizing Walker in an attempt to make you realize that the inherent disconnect in indiscriminately slaughtering white blobs from the sky with a button press is ludicrous. The game is intentionally using Walker as a whipping boy to create a disconnect between you as the player and the avatar (Walker) to make you uncomfortable, and it worked perfectly. the game isnt trying to make you feel bad for it as you never had a choice to begin with, while it could of been executed better and even the devs admit they could of made it better but were restricted by console limitations, it holds a different meaning and the execution of the choices later on through the games mechanics over a cut scene certainly improves upon it
if you paid enough attention, the player is along for the ride and isnt meant to be represented by walker which is pointed out in the very first minutes of the game when it says "Special Guest: [username]", its an exploration of the whole heroism mindset, ptsd and objective driven games where the player is meant to feel powerful
walker is not the player themselves but meant to show how hes not so different from the player and that they have a lot to relate over, such as justifying ones actions to ignore what theyve done, convincing that theyre the hero of the story and that what theyre doing is for the greater good
