I'm imagining a good Star Trek game being one of those interactive Heavy Rain-type movie games, largely a cinematic experience of choosing what to do and letting it play out, but incorporating some "Captain's Experience/Intuition" mode where the captain you're playing as can pause time to hear an internal dialogue where the captain thinks about the situation and sorta works as a glossary so the layman player can get a better understanding of what's going on.

The Star Trek Armada 3 mod for Sins of a Solar Empire is probably the closest we'll ever get to a perfect Trek RTS.
The game's effects are actually just good enough (and just shitty enough) to accurately recreate the feel of the 90s CG that was used throughout the series. Plus, watching the Defiant try to fight its way through a 100-ship clusterfuck is awesome.

Most episodes up until David Tennant dies are decent, and pretty much all of the really, really great episodes fall within that period.

It started going downhill with Matt Smith's run (with a few good episodes still coming here and there), and Peter Capaldi's run is complete shit - the writing and characters in the first season were horrible, and in the second season Steven Moffat went full-blown liberal nutjob on top of that and started literally rewriting history because 'we wuz everythang and shieet'. That said, there's an episode where the Doctor is completely by himself for the whole thing because Peter Capaldi really does an excellent job as the Doctor (it's literally everything else that's shit), and a Christmas special which is pretty good too because the team decided to get competent out of nowhere for one last time.

You can pick:
- Modern Fed faction
- TOS Fed (both Modern and TOS are essentially in the same faction)
- Klink faction
- Fed-Aligned Rom
- Klink-Aligned Rom

There's something for everyone. You can choose from established ST races, although some races are aligned with a certain faction, with exceptions. For example, you can make a Fed-Klink character after you buy it. Yes, there's microshekels if you don't feel like grinding. You can also play as a furry. And as a freaky AYY. You can customize the appearance using a variety of ST and STO-specific alien features.

There are costumes for ships and for your toon.

There are faction-aligned ships and cross-faction ships.

There are also STO-only races, ships, etc.

Space combat might be confusing in the beginning but once you figure out how each kind of ship can gear up, spec, and fly, it shouldn't be a problem.

Ground combat (aka Away Team), you can play as 3rd person or 1st person.

Setting up traits (ground, space, reputation, etc.), specs, ship choice, gear, and so on can also be overwhelming for beginners. This isn't like D3 where shit's babby casual. There's some depth to ship builds. Not so much depth in ground builds though. Just do some research.
