in SH2? In The Water, closely rivaled by the Dog.

sure. Let's start by reposting the SH PC Guide + DL links :

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" fix works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW widescreen fixes mentioned in guide, the sh2proxy's EXE works as no-cd crack too.

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
You can now see fine emulator settings for SH1 in the guide. You may also try the newer PGXP emulator for wobble-free PS1 graphics.

Every ending is good (except Rebirth), but Leave and In Water feel like the most appropriate endings.

I actually finished it for the first time yesterday, been too scared to play it ever since it came out but I finally got around to it. Fucking great game, so happy I got around to finally playing it.
I got the Leave ending, which is the one I wanted to get, but I'd still argue that the In Water ending is the "actual" ending.

I absolutely loved it. Parts of the hotel felt like kind of a slog, but I guess that's because we played it in one sitting. It felt really eerie and hostile, but at the same time kind of calm, even reflective in a way. The music and sound design was fucking stellar and I have a hard time believing a game from 2001 really could look that good, Konami sure were on top that year.
Difficulty was on Normal for both combat and riddles - didn't want to play on easy, and hard seemed too scary.

I didn't play Silent Hill 1 first, but mainly because 2 and 3 were the only ones I had. I borrowed them from a friend a while back. I know 2 is considered "the black sheep" out of them all since it's less connected or something, but I won't let that get in the way for enjoying 1 when I actually DO play it, so don't worry about that.
>>
>>385110549
Hard combat is not too bad, you can just outrun most enemies anyway. Hard puzzles on the other hand might expect you to know Shakespeare by heart.
>>
>>385110676
That sounds fair. Mainly wanted to actually finish the game without it being super easy and without, as you said, knowing Shakespeare by heart.
>>
>>385110676
>hard combat is not too bad
The Pyramid Head chase in the hospital becomes a chore on hard, since you have to shoot at him at every corner.

you really, really should NOT even consider playing SH3 before finishing SH1 for real. I can live with people popping their cherry with SH2, no matter that I consider 1 to be vastly superior introduction to the saga... but playing SH3 first will simply spoil both the original AND the 3 itself.

I always thought the Leave ending made for the most well-written story. The fact that James comes to Silent Hill to die, sees all the shit he sees and decides to go on living is a lot more compelling than him deciding to kill himself anyways.

I'd say the biggest flaw of SH2 is that Leave is the default ending rather than In Water. James came to Silent Hill to die, like you said, so him forgiving himself being the default ending makes no sense. It would've been better if you had to work for Leave.

You get the In Water ending by really taking your time to explore the town and discovering various hidden secrets. You get Leave (the closest thing to a happy ending) by rushing past most of the extra content.

Not only is that shit from a game design standpoint, but it also clashes with the fact that Leave is what Mary wanted for James. You'd think that James doing stuff like listening to the hallway conversation and listening to the tape recorder would help James remember that, rather than it driving him to suicide.

>You get the In Water ending by really taking your time to explore the town and discovering various hidden secrets. You get Leave (the closest thing to a happy ending) by rushing past most of the extra content.
That's veeery extreme trivializing of the requirements. If anything, it's easier to get the In Water by rushing like a madman; heck, it's technically one major requirement.

>it also clashes with the fact that Leave is what Mary wanted for James
That is you assuming that James is a good man. Or that a man who committed such crime would want to live alone anymore.

you should see couple yards in front of you at all times even it total darkness. Check your in-game Brightness setting.

From my experience, modern computer monitors and TV screens are a tad too bright for these games, meaning that even zero brightness setting allows you to see everything just fine.

>>385113989
That artist has done lots of similarly goofy stuff for the mag's front in the past. But yeah, that's a fine example of how an American Silent Hill game would have looked like.
>>
>>385112523
The casual ending is always the easiest one to get in both SH1 and SH2. Leave being the default ending in case the player just rushes through the game is very fitting, because James went to Silent Hill for redemption and if he leaves Silent Hill it means he didn't learn anything, much like the player himself.

In my restless dreams, I see that town. Silent Hill.
That ending breaks me. Mary's tired voice, her slight cracking at the end, really trying to hold it together, really sells it.
James...you made me happy.
>>
>>385114446
>Leave being the default ending in case the player just rushes through the game is very fitting
I still dare to say that this is totally false.
You NEED to rush like a mad man on drugs to get the In The Water.
My first playthrough(s), I took my sweet time, played extra careful, checked almost every corner, etc, and got the Leave.

>because James went to SH for redemption
I would argue about that as well. He most likely went there to die.
>>
>>385114482
>character starts crying while narrating
Aside from SH2 and MGS3, I can't think of any other game that does this, which is a shame because it's a trope that I love.
>>
>>385114621
I got In Water on my first play through and that was because I was being conservative with my healing items. Rushing doesn't even factor into it.
>>
>>385114790
Yeah. If I see someone I care for crying, I'm not so empathetic to cry as well but seeing someone trying to keep it together and obviously cracking, that always breaks me.
>>

>>
>>385115003
Kind of true. The ends are more affected by things not yet mentioned ITT: How much time you spend with Maria, whether or not you check the Knife you get from Angela, how much you examine the Letter... etc.

Rebirth is the most spooky for me, so that one.
>>
>>385115132

>>
>>385114621
During my first playthrough i got in water because it kept examining and trying to use Angela's knife everywhere, lol.

>I would argue about that as well. He most likely went there to die.

In Japan, suicide is seen as a form to atone for mistakes or wrongdoings. By killing himself, James redeemed himself.
>>
>>385108501
I'm not really a sucker for happy endigs, but Leave was my favorite because I felt that James deserved a second chance at life.

James was in extreme levels of psychological pain to the point of developing dementia, hallucinations and delusions, so the suicide part still fitting even for Western audiences. Which is why the "Silent Hill is psychiatrist town" meme doesn't make much sense, hitting bags of meat with a 2x4 and shooting the rotting carcass of your wife in the face with a rifle isn't going to fix someone.

Yeah, I do find the idea of someone being totally unable to play and enjoy SH1 this day and age very weird, even more so if one has already played the sequels or original RE games.

>>
>>385119514
I curious now, with that display you have, didnt you notice any aliasing or blurry textures at all?
>>
>>385119141
SH3 had not only great art-style, but also has a dedicated LCD screen mode ("Sharp" mode), and 60hz option. Those alone help a lot.
>>
>>385119596
I had a few settings on that helped out. There's a digital clean view setting that I turned on to help with blurriness and a motion rate setting to essentially simulate 60fps while playing and it felt smooth but was weird because I know that's how that game isn't supposed to be played.
But yes, the aliasing was jaggy and the textures were a bit blurry but it looked better playing on that TV then it does playing on my other Sony 42 inch HD TV. Of course for old games I still have my Sony Trinitron CRT that I mostly play all my old games that makes it look the best.
>>
>>385120165
Sh3 actually DOES run at 60fps, and the 60hz allows you to see that properly as well. Sure, it drops to 30s from time to time, but it's still impressive for PS2.

Many TVs also have this "Movie mode", that kinda mutes colors and makes things bit less sharp, which I've found to work wonders on older SD-era games. Together with the native Film Grain effect, it can result very tolerable visuals even on modern HD TVs.

On my old 720p only flat screen, most PS2 games looked very nice, partly thanks to there being less to upscale from 480p.

I think Leave was the best ending in the game, and one of my favorite endings in any game period. The thought of a broken man getting redemption and the spirit of Mary forgiving him and understanding why he did it is a beautiful concept imo. And the fact that you can "earn" it through in-game mechanics by focusing on finding Mary, listening to the hallway conversations and avoiding distractions like the knife is a cool way to go about doing it.

Certainly.
While the story elements are kinda important, the good ol' "it's not the destination, but the journey" saying fits these titles damn well. It's not only about what you can SEE in the games, but what you EXPERIENCE yourself while playing.

For best results, play alone, in the dark, with loud volume. And obviously you should start with SH1, if you already haven't played it.

>>385121770
Yes.
SH games have been THE gateway titles for many chickens like you, partly because they do not rely on jump scares, but rather build up disturbing atmosphere. There's also so much of story, symbolism, and audio-visual glory to be found in these games, again giving something for everyone to enjoy.

If all else fails, just play on Low action difficulty, and increase puzzle mode for some challenge of different sort. You can also try playing in short bursts, like from a save-spot to another, or so on.

As much as I love and consume these titles nowadays, I ain't ashamed to admit that on the first playthroughs, I only could play around 30-50 minutes at once, before needing a nerve calming break.
>>
>>385121205
What the fuck were they thinking.
I mean, the other world's atmosphere is decent compared to the other western games, but including pyramid head in the game and even having Alex become pyramid head in one of the endings was unforgivable. The only decent thing about homecoming are the bosses designs and the ending where his dad drowns him in the bath tub.
>>
>>385120972
It's still a good game, not to mention it's more about the delivery and emotional impact of scenes that makes them good.

I know even the controls have turned off many new players in recent years, but if ya have played the original RE games or anything similar, you should be right at home with SH's moves.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDfirpIok10

The only reason I played those abominations was because I was starved of silent hill horror. Some parts of the game were decent though, like the part where Alex's mom is executed.
>>
>>385122808
But Pyramid Head is already someone.
He's to James what Maria is to Mary.
>>
>>385108501
Im playing the game for the first time and I have no idea what triggers each ending, I'd rather not know.

Just left the Hospital, Maria didn't make it to the elevator and supposedly ""died"", I jumped down a hole and got stuck on a tiny room full of cockroaches, didn't know how to leave and died.
>>
>>385117087
I played around 5 years ago. I'm still scared of its satanic imagery. I don't even know why, since I lurk /x/ and am used to it, but Silent Hill makes demons scary as hell.
>>
>>385124029
Enter the correct code and open the door.
>>
>>385122808
If you choose to kill every character during the moral choice parts, you get the ending where two Pyramid Heads attached the metal pyramid to the protagonist's head and he turns into a 3rd Pyramid Head. The idea is that by executing everyone for their sins, the protagonist becomes an executioner of the otherworld. Which just shows how little the Western devs cared about the source material, in the movies Pyramid Head is Alessa's guardian and in Homecoming he is just an executioner.
>>
>>385122808
it's not.

Similarly, UFO ending is a completely NORMAL ending in HC, which you can acquire on your very first playthrough, just by playing relatively normally as well.
>>
>>385124163
Team Silent's idea of combining the satanic occult stuff with industrial environments was simply genius, in my opinion. I know that Eraserhead and Jacob's Ladder did the "nightmarish industrial environment" thing first, but the way the otherworld is designed in SH1-3 is simply amazing, it feels genuinely claustrophobic and frightening but also interesting at the same time.
>>
>>385125380
I agree, now that you point that out. You tend to imagine Hell as a wasteland with fire, which some might even interpret as badass, but industrial environments feel impossibly dead. You could even think of the ice and the fire worlds, but you have nothing like that in this environment. Add to that the goddamn demons. There's no warmth, no comfort, you're fucked.

Leave without any doubt.
I feel like people pick the In the Water ending because it's the most tragic ending and I get why they like it, but the entire game is about people who can't move on from the past and Leave being about being able to forgive yourself and let go ties with the main themes and plot so much better.

James was hunted by Mary and his last actions with her, we spend the entire game learning about him, Mary the other characters. The Mary that shows up in the endings isn't really she or a ghost it's James's subconscious the "...then why do you look sad?" shows us how much he loved her and how despair driven he actually is and we finally get to read her letter in wich she tells him to live, go on with his life and be happy.

It can be literally "Enough is enough, James", with very judging tone.

Also, no matter that I've played the game dozens of times, I do not recall the LETTER mentioning anything about wanting James to keep going and be happy. Instead, it's all Mary being thankful for the time they had together.

What did Team Silent do after getting disbanded? I know Akira Yamoka kept composing music for other Konami series as normal. And another thing, all the Silent Hill games, excluding the first one, were directed by people with no prior directing role.

Like, you can barely find info the on the SH2, and SH3 directors, which is weird. But even then, you can barely find info on a lot of Konami employees, except for the really big ones (like Iga, Akira Yamoka, Hideo Kojima, Masahiro Ito). I wonder if Konami didn't want its employees stating on their resume that they worked with them.

Yeah, I remember reading that Good-Feel (a Nintendo first party), has some talent that worked on the Goemon games.

And I think Akira Yamaoka has been with Grasshopper for a while now, but he also composed some songs for Konami while being a Grasshopper employee. The Silent Hill 3D movie has some tracks by him, and that was when he was with Grasshopper. I think it's cool that he still decides to make some tracks for the series if given the chance. Same with Elizabeth McGlynn, I know all the Western titles have a vocal song by her. That might not be the case with Downpour, I have never played that one, so I'm not sure if there's a vocal track of her.

This is because SH2 and SH3 were developed like a group of friends making a game. They had almost complete freedom. for example the famous "There was a hole here, it's gone now" writing was added randomly by a background designer, it has no meaning or purpose, it wasn't an idea by the director, writer or Masahiro Ito and still fans love it and try to find meaning in it.

They're short as fuck. Strafe sprint your way through the game avoiding all the enemies. And use that item that gives you unlimited stamina (forgot its name), in the right situations. exploit dumb bosses with the right weapons.

My best time on SH3 was like 45 minutes (and that's without looking up the optimal strats), which is nothing compared to the WR. It's really fun. But that's just for SH3.

I don't like SH2 that much.

I'll probably get back into it after I find a way to connect my ps2 to my monitor, and a way to track my time, because I really don't know much about speedrunning. I also want to speedrun another game, in which I think I can be a top 5 runner.

it's quite shame that people these days grab a guide so easily. Partly because online guides are so easily available.

I always got Bad+ ending on the first few times, because I'd gotten spoiled of the Aglaophotis via some game magazine's hint section, but never realized to check out the places in South Park. Figuring that shit out later on by myself was mindblowing and exciting.

it's amazing how much stuff people attempted to jam on the tinyass 8-bit system the GBC was. RE and that thing obviously were canceled, but AitD of all things actually did come out.

Makes me wonder what a skilled team could've gotten done with the GBA tech. There was that short RE2 tech demo done for it, which is prolly a good indicator.

Rather than portable SH1, I would've prefer to see an N64 port. With the entire game being in full 3D instead of pre-rendered, having relatively little voice acting and FMVs compared to RE2, I'd guess it would have worked just nicely.

There are many options on how to deal with that problem though, like having mobs and puzzles slightly randomized a la RE3 way, or having the world and events way more open and varied, so that there's numerous ways to approach and solve them. Zelda:BotW is a fine, if not a bit surprising example of this, with different people finding totally different kinds of solutions, having problems with different sections, and finding different places in different order (or not at all).

Anybody with a mental health disorder can enter Silent Hill. The power of Silent Hill is not religious in nature, it's just worshiped by religious people(and natives as well), it's not good or bad and it's not judging anybody.

Well, anyone can enter Silent Hill just in general.

In water. It seems the most logical choice for James. He's clearly heavily depressed, and while he accepted what he did to Mary, the crushing guilt of that acceptance would push anyone to the brink of taking their own life.

But I'll always have a soft spot for the ending where he leaves with Laura. That's the ending Mary would have wanted for the both of them.

This must be the Lovecraftfags's favorite theory. There is an article in the game that says that a ship disappeared in the lake and that an even stranger event happened a few decades later, which is why there is this theory that the lake is from the power comes from, plus the player find the article in a place that is supposedly inside the lake and it's where the weirdest stuff in the entire game happens.

>>
>>385108501
Leave. I think its overall the best ending and likely the canon ending, it's never been explicitly stated which ending is despite everyone believing its In Water because its been implied by 1 Team Silent member. I find Leave is the most complete and wholesome ending.

James tone between the two endings is a lot different. And the exchange in Leave between Maria and then Mary left a lasting impression on me. It was also kind of poetic that Maria tells James that he deserves to die, but Mary, who questions James selfishness when he admits his guilt, instead asks him to do something for her, to live.

Konami still uses their IPs to incorapte the OSTs into their music games (Beatmania, Dance Dance Revolution, Pop'n Music, etc.). And also to re-release OSTs to the Japanese market. Also, pachinko and as references in other games, like Bomberman. Also, for licensing their games to Nintendo (NES/SNES classic). And re-releasing games digitally. Mobile and all that other shit.

They still use them, probably not the way anyone would like, but they still use their IPs. I don't think they would sell them unless for a really good price.

The play novel has the missing pages:

>In 1938, an even stranger incident occurred. Unlike the Little Baroness, this ship was found. Or rather, only the ship was found. Not a single soul was found on board. With the vessel completely undamaged, there was no reason for anyone to have jumped overboard. Much like the Mary Celeste in 1872 and the Carroll Deering in 1921, the passengers vanished as if they were never there. At the time, the prevailing theory was that a mass suicide had been carried out, but this seems highly unlikely considering it was nothing more than a tourist boat.

>More recently, another unexplainable event happened only six years ago. In order to verify the truth of the legend surrounding the lake, in an act that was in actuality nothing more than a dare, two students went missing after venturing out onto the lake in a small boat. We’ve had the good fortune to have met with a young man who is familiar with this incident, being a classmate of the missing high school students. He claims to have been present on the morning the two set off. However, he believes that the boat was capsized.

>“Either way, that lake really creeps me out." He shared with us one of the ghost stories he’d heard about the lake.
>“People say that if you try to go out on Toluca Lake at midnight, your engine will die and you’ll be stranded until morning.”

So the "stranger events" are basically the entire crew and passengers disappearing, probably being swallowed into the otherworld. People were disappearing way before the events of the Alessa ritual.

Afraid Of Monsters: Director's Cut, and the Cry Of Fear. Both are pretty blatant tributes to both RE and SH games, just in first-person.

People tend to bash 'em by calling them "jump scare fests", but it was always the absolute nightmarefuel atmosphere + truly dangerous enemies that made them so disturbing for me. Shows that a truly depressed emo teen head can cook up quite twisted stuff.

In SH1 it's just a backstory, it has no relevance to Harry or anybody else. Alessa liked insects and Harry has to kill a giant moth in the game, so it's not just negative things.

In SH3, the otherworld is it's own place, Harry's notepads are still there 17 years later and Valtiel truly is God's servant.
>>
>>385154596
Agreed.

Descents into violence and madness in dehumanizing hellscapes of our design. I'm surprised there's no WW1 horror games about mud, corpses, trenches, barbed wire and the effects of increasingly modern and bizarre warfare on old world minds who still charged into battle. The looming sense of a great and terrible change in the world. Just the absolutely epic scale of death.

>In SH1 it's just a backstory, it has no relevance to Harry or anybody else
it directly related to Alessa.

>in SH3, the otherworld is its own place
not necessary. It is just literally originating and forming around you at all times.
Harry's Notepads are where they are, because he was mostly walking in places just "infected" with the projections. It's safe to bet that they were restored to original-ish state afterwards.

Everything else's also somewhat up for debate. Valtiel may be merely an image of an idea Claudia envisioned, with Heather's ya-know-what and past reading it like a script. There's also the "memory of Alessa" that's clearly partially playing tricks on the area.

My first silent hill memory was way back in the early 2000's when I stayed at my neighbor's house to play videogames all day.

At the end of the day another kid brought silent hill 1 to play on his PS but I had to go so I just watched him play the beginning. I remember the dog remains stayed with me for a long time before I played it myself like 5-8 years layer. That really creeped me out.

>>
>>385158303
>It is just literally originating and forming around you at all times.

Outside of Silent Hill and by Claudia. SH3's otherworld is like a combination of Satan's hell and Hades's underworld. The Splithead dogs basically represent Cerberus to symbolize that Heather is entering the otherworld(Hell/Underworld), the closer(appears in SH2 too, so he is not James or Claudia's monster) has "Like Lotus Sutra" written on his forehead, Valtiel can revive Heather just like Book of Memories from SH2 claims. In SH3 the mythology is just too real to be merely mental projections.

>>385165501
>SH1
The best ending. The one where Cybil lives and you run with the baby.

>SH2
This one is hard for me since I feel the endings were all effective for different reasons. However I think the one that seems to make the most logical sense all things considered is the resurrection ending where James wants to revive Mary. You can only get that one after beating the game once though. Besides that ending I actually like the ending where he leaves with Maria. All the endings are very effective and I'd pretty much consider them all to be almost equal besides the joke endings.

>SH3
The best ending.

>SH4
The best ending...again

SH2 had the best endings in the series. The other games it feels like you got cheated if you don't get the best ending. I especially felt this with SH4 since I got the worst ending in that game first playthrough.
>>
So I mount SH3 and the Launcher plays, play game does nothing and I've already installed it... eh...
