Armored Core, The Last Raven

You cannot win the final mission. You can last an insane long time and do very well, but you cannot win.

No country for old men.

I will never not be mad at how 343 handled the series. Rookie dying in a book. Spartans going from stoic supersoldiers who sacrificed their chances at a normal life for the safety of others, to just egotistical Odst's in nicer armor who whine and bicker like children. Cortana's character assassination. Regressing the relationship of humans and elites.

I'm angrier over halo's state than I am over mass effect 3. Speaking of, there's another game where no matter what you do, the moment you bought it you already lost.

pretty much every definition of a game states that it must have a goal or an objective. if you remove the end state what you're left with is 'play'. I didn't consider that loss is infact an end state- so that's a fair point.

Those are really loose definitions. Masturbating while looking at porn can provide entertainment or amusement, a pass time. That does not make it a game. The second definition includes 'sport (a game)' in its definition which is kind of lazy; but as Chris Crawford points out; you can compete without a game taking place.

I think you can win games without an set end state. Games like DF or even Mount and Blade are primarily experience focused, so you 'win' the game by achieving what you set out to achieve or getting to a point where you're satisfied enough to start again or call time.
>>
>>385104547

There's your problem, the only mistakes you should be thinking about are your own, because 99% of the time, your teammates are always retarded and can't even dodge a fucking skillshot if they saw it coming from across the map.

It depends on what school of thought you subscribe to, but I'd say that having a goal is a necessary component to defining a game from play. DF players even joke that loosing spectacularly is the 'objective' of the game.

what is the fundamental difference between capitalism and neocapitalism?
>>

watch the film. explains it far better than i ever could.
but basically, accruing capital used to be for the purposes of protectionism and long term success etc.
>>
>>385101681
life
>>
>>385106843
I have watched the film. Almost every december since I was a kid.

It sounds like you're saying the difference is in how people choose to use the capital they accrue rather than any fundamental systemic difference. That's not two different systems, it's just people choosing how to behave within one. If you're saying there are actually two different economic systems represented in the film I've missed that all these years and I'd be curious to know what exactly I'm missing.
>>
>>385106983
no, capitalism is an ethos.

neo capitalism is the modern day corruption and reversal of it.
>>
>>385107059
capitalism is not corporatism
what's practiced today isn't capitalism
>>
>>385106983
the original intent of capitalism was to build up the capital for a reason, to protect and serve the community, etc.

neo capitalism arose because greedy currupt short sighted fuckwits decided shoving all that money up their assholes was more fun, especially if they got their hands on it by screwing over some poor bastard.

capitalism has shifted from a pastoral long term national planning system into a vicious adversarial short term short sighted self defeating racket.
>>
>>385107180
also my point.

that's why i recommend people watch the film, because this is a 1946 film showing us the differences, and its still relevant to this day.
>>
>>385107212
it's not "neo-capitalism" though
using that kind of language is not effective communication
>>
>>385107212
I think you're assigning a lot of intention where there is just system.

Capitalism is an economic system where property and means of production are owned privately and used for financial profit. That's it. There's no "pastoral long term national planning" automatically built into that. That comes from social values and the individual decisions of those who have the capital.

The "corruption" you're talking about happened because in capitalism those who own capital are free to do as they wish with it, and human beings tend to be greedy. It will always happen in any capitalist system unless restraints are put in place. This old wonderful capitalism you're pining after never existed. You're talking about a time when people worked for slave wages in filthy, dangerous factories while the owners of those factories got rich. You're talking about what led to the great depression. It's a Wonderful Life is a product of the New Deal era. The small town, humanitarian values it espouses are rooted in a time when the country was almost completely unified in agreeing that capitalism had to be restricted and controlled and was massively implementing socialist programs.
>>
>>385107618
the corruption happened because people stopped practicing capitalism, and started practicing corporatism.
>>
>>385107813
"Corporatism" is not mutually exclusive with capitalism. In fact, really, if you have unfettered capitalism, it's basically inevitable you will end up with corporations. The only way you could prevent this is by ruling it illegal, which is inherently not pure capitalism anymore.
>>
>>385107902
yes it is.
corporatism goes against the private ownership of wealth as it is a collectivization tool enforced by the state.
capitalism is a system without a state, so yes regulation by a strong state wouldn't be "pure capitalism," but an inability to merge with a weak state could be "pure capitalism"
>whataboutisms
>>
>>385101681
Getting back to OP, whose question obviously didn't mean to include games with no win conditions, like Cities: Skylines, the censored version of I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream is unwinnable because they removed the concentration camp part, but didn't make it possible to get the key item you need from it elsewhere.
