Because it perfectly combines game and social elements. Making it theoretically a much better experience than single player games.

Sadly, 99% of devs forget MMOs forget they're even multiplayer games, let alone meant to be social and immersive.

MMOs are fine games, but how do you build player satisfaction from a handful of experiences?
How many times can you reiterate a raid, or a dungeon or a minigame or whatever.

Why is it that I can go back and play Super Mario Bros, take the exact same path I take as the other 900 times I've played it and still have fun?
Why is repetition fun for that kind of game but not for an RPG?

Then I think back on how many RPGs I've played through twice and it's not many considering I rank them as some of my favourite vidya.

I think MMOs need more arcade like gameplay.
They need to move away from these RPG systems.
You need to move away from the combat models of WoW. You need to move away from the numbers and weapons and armour.
Because they don't serve a gameplay purpose other than damage output.

I think the RPG element is what is slowly killing MMOs.
>>
>>385101272
Thank you kind sir/madame for the answer, have a pleasant time of day.
>>
But many MMOs today are actually more single player oriented.
>>
>>385097217
Vindictus isn't an MMO. It's an arena musou. There are literally no MMO elements other than it being multiplayer.
>>
something that irritates me about modern MMOs are the immense quantity of quests shoved on you right off the fucking bat. I miss RO for being simplistic in this regard, just go grind your shit have fun.

>inb4 complaints about grind in a fucking MMO thread
>>
>>385101560
MMOs need to get people out of menus.

That's something development teams need to do.
Just anytime there's a menu, think, "Can we do it without this?"

Because as soon as you're in a menu, you're disconnected socially.
You're not finding a party, you're just clicking a few things.
You're not in the world, you're in the UI component of the game.
>>
>>385101871
Grinding is shit. No one likes grinding, they enjoy progression.
Grinding is an end to a mean, i.e. "I reach this level so I can unlock this".

So here's your challenge: How do you remove level grinding, but still keep a drawn out pace to progression for players?
>>
>>385101871
Nobody fucking likes grinding or find it fun for that matter. What is wrong with you.

The problem with MMO is that the unique, associated costs with maintaining and updating an MMO make it very different from any other genre.

The developers feel they have to have players roped in with a sense of progression if they're gonna keep paying a subscription fee. And that's how features like levels, grinding, gear treadmill and other bad mmo shit has become the absolute standard. As well as WoW's success, which people attributed to it being a great game with great features, which it wasn't. It was new, big, and well marketed. That's it. Sadly, developers are STILL copying WoW's formulas and mistakes.

Until devs get off both the subscription business model and the F2P model, MMOs won't progress. You'll see one or two with different mechanics and trying different things, but they're all inherently rotten.

Even if these features were good, and they're not, after nearly two decades of MMOs that all do the same thing, everyone is tired of it. Nobody wants to level to max level. Nobody wants to do raids. The only MMOs that still succeed (relatively) at this are FFXIV and WoW. The latter because timesink and nostalgia, and the former because it's a big name brand and aesthetics (and because a big portion of their playerbase are upset at WoW/Blizzard because they can't accept they grew up)

It's a big, convoluted problem, and honestly, it bugs me a ton, because MMOs, I feel, haven't explored their full potential or close to it. It's such a mechanically and creatively stale genre with such a broad spectrum of possibilities, it's honestly disheartening to see it in such a state.

I think there's a way to do grinding right, and it's not how it's done now.
Grinding as a word has a negative connotation. It's a drag.

What you want is paced progression. Paced exploration. Paced combat.
As it stands, grinding is just watching numbers go up.

Let's have an example..
You need to cross through some area. Say a forest.
But games want to gate you with levels. You're not dealing enough damage to make it through here.
But in an ideal MMO, no enemy scales with levels or numbers, they just are. 2 hits on an enemy will always be two hits for the most part.

So then the grind becomes about planning and traversal.
How do you make it through the forest? Do you need a torch? Do you need items? What about the enemies?
>>
>>385102719
As soon as people see MMORPG though, they want the staples.
They want their dungeons, they want the raids, the want the crafting.

MMOs are just a big bag of "Here's what Warcraft did".
They just try and cram everything in because it's a monthly service fee.
If we take Phantasy Star Online or Diablo, they're just about dungeon crawling, right?
There's no crafting, no casinos, no fucking PvP.

Let's take XIV. What is XIV really about? Story. So have the game revolve around the world and the players influence on it.

What about Warcraft? What's it about? It's about the world. So have player interaction with it be the main focus.
>>
>>385103043

tl;dr

grind works fine for games like Monster Hunter, if you don't like grind then don't play it, simple as that.
>>
>>385103475
You're trying to incorporate a social element into the gameplay, correct?
All the leveling does is just gate players. It's a thoughtless activity.

You want emergent gameplay, not gated gameplay.
You don't want timers, weekly resets or levels.
You want to gate people in terms of gameplay.

You want to say, "I can't make it over this mountain because I don't have the means to cross it yet", not "I'm not high level enough to make it through the mobs".
>>
>>385096850
>tfw had about 30 friends altogether and we were gonna play on felmyst
>dies within four hours so everyone scatters to the four winds again
>>
It there even MMO that does exploration well?

No, I don't mean BDO. Having a big world isn't enough. I want to find secret things and be rewarded for it. I want to just travel not just to see the sights, and I don't want to be gated by my level.

Are there any MMOs that do this? BDO is a joke.
>>
My biggest problems with mmo are either too much grinding or not enough grinding and then a lack of endgame content or it's just very boring/repetitive.
>>
>>385104226
Tibia. You can do plenty of adventuring and exploring on even lower level too. Wandering into too dangerous places is gonna get you killed though.
>>
Give me a good MMO I could grind the hell out of it excluding Black Desert
>>
>>385104848
This is the problem with leveling, right?
It's linear, there's an end. You're going to reach a cap and have the gameplay be revolving around that level cap.

We were talking about emergent gameplay.
I order to have that, you need every area to be equal in traversal and combat.
Just think about how bad a game like Gradius or Super Mario would become with Attack Points, or a permanent fire flower.

MMOs should be looking at Dark Souls and Breath of the Wild.
>>
>>385104937
FFXIV and WoW are both immensely grindy.
WoW is lategame, FFXIV is early game. WoW is faster and has better/more gameplay, FFXIV is prettier and more polished.

Pick your poison.

>>
>>385107973
There's a big divide currently because games are trying to appeal to everyone.

You have the players who do nothing but content, mostly solo, and just want to have solid gameplay with other people at the sides. And you have the socializers, who don't give a shit about the game, and just want a world to shitpost in and pretend to be a girl.

The only MMOs worth playing are the ones where they only appeal to either of these playerbases, not both.
>>
>>385107817
Honestly playing anything with friends is usually pretty fun. Do your friends actually play with you, or are they the sort of people who are like 'just reach endgame bro that's where the cool stuff is' and leave you to figure shit out on your own?

or do you just hate your friends
>>
>>385096850
>implying its even fast enough to be worth it

Even if you get double exp when you group with friends you still gonna waste a shit load of time grinding your ass off for levels.
Because thats pretty much how they keep the autists playing those games, by making the most boring part of those games last even longer.
I have been trying out mmorpgs with friends since I was in highschool and I never played a single one that actually had a decent non-autistic grinding.
I fucking wish such a game existed cuz I love the concept of mmorpgs but leveling up always get boring after a point and I move on to something else.
The original Ragnarok Online and Mabinogi must have been my most played mmorpgs and only reason I kept playing was because of my friends.
Hell even my girlfriend at the time had a more leveled up character than mine.
Its a enigma to me how someone can just sit there clicking on the screen, killing the same monsters, doing the same quests, till max level.

>>
>>385108946
You might have to elaborate on 'charged skills' for me. The other FF game I think of for Warrior/Berserker is FFV and their defining trait was just permanent Berserk and using Axes. It's disappointing XIV's Warrior is a tank, but what's this about charging?
>>
I'd call ARK a MMO now. You can basically travel from server to server waging war with anyone. Each server is now basically a shard and you can interact with everything. Its the FPS EVE. If Rust had Official server transfers it could become like this also. Fucking korean hordes waging battles across all servers.
>>
>>385109047
Your friends suck and are full of shit, the game 'gets good' at around level 35, and really shines in Trials - but if you hate the leveling process and the story hasn't grabbed you by that point it's time to just fuckin drop the game.

Jumping to 60 so the story has nothing for you to invest in, skipping most the best content in the game to get to an end game which is stunted and lacking in depth due to the expansion just launching is just retarded. I'd suggest giving a 60 extreme trial a go synced to see if you like what's there at least - or maybe Binding Coil (the 50 raid), but your friends have kind of set you up to not enjoy yourself here in the name of just getting another body to max level for whatever reason.
>>
>>385109047
Then they're just weebs.

The game doesn't get better. You get few more abilities to use during GDC and that's about it. The combat is still shallow, unimpactful and simple. Quests are still just fetch x or kill y. Raids, trials and whatever are just the usual 'don't stand in the red area, dps for 10 minutes' type deal.

FFXIV is just the most cookie cutter MMO ever made. It's funny they and WoW argue so much given the fact that they're playing the exact same game, except one has orcs instead of catgirls.
>>

WoW and FFXIV play differently at endgame. WoW relies on proc spam and paying attention to add-ons because the game is a visual clusterfuck, meanwhile FFXIV has no sort of add-ons outside of parsers and combat is more mechanically rigid. Sure the GCD is 1 second higher but you make up for it with instant abilities that can be weaved in frequently. It's almost required to double weave at endgame FFXIV while in WoW you don't double weave you just spam your 1-3 global cooldown attacks and hope they proc.
>>
>>385110815

It must be frustrating to someone who's actually played the game, but the demo is just awful. My experience with FF14 is that the game is incredibly slow and shitty and you have like 3 moves you spam over and over with 3 others on long cooldwns to kill like 20 dudes before being forced to watch another long cutscene that you don't care about. And for some reason you have to go through your inventory to hand in quest items manually, which is incredibly clunky and slow.

You know, I've been playing around in MMOs lately, and I've been reading these threads, and a large complaint I seem to be gathering from people is that MMOs aren't as social anymore, and many people seem to be blaming it on the fact that a lot of MMOs copy WoW and make it so that you don't HAVE to interact with others. While I think the gameplay is heading that direction, I don't think that's why people are so anti-social online. I think that people in general are just becoming more anti-social. There are fewer reasons to talk to people in general, and starting up friendships is kind of a hassle, especially when it turns out that they are irreconcilably opinionated against your opinions and you wind up getting into arguments and whatnot.

I remember when I used to go onto MMOs in the early days, and people would be chatty and friendly with me at the drop of a hat, and I would say hello to complete strangers or emote at them to get their attention. Now, someone might come by and emote at me, but then they'll wander off while the rest of the world ignores me, and I never feel any desire to say hello to people.

Maybe what's wrong with MMOs is just the people in them?
>>
>>385111005
You haven't played endgame WoW in at least two years.
>>
>>385111237
If you have to force people through a massive fuckton of the most awful, slow, shitty gameplay so the game gets 'good', and the only way to skip that is paying for cash shop shit ontop of the sub and expansions, your game is complete trash.

Those people quit because most of the game isn't fun. Even if 50% of the game is fun, which it isn't, that doesn't excuse the other 50% being gun-to-head levels of awful.
>>
>>385111896
I used to play FFXI a lot back when it was good still. The game forced you to interact with people via exp parties. sure you can join one and be mute with no consequences, it was just boring as fuck. it took literally months to reach max level, all the while you're in many different exp parties with most times, new people. I made dozens of friends in that game, several of which I still talk to 8 years later.

nowadays in MMOs you solo to max level in a day or three and most of the content in the game can be done solo sans endgame raids. MMOs today are basically single player games that you play next to other people.

>>
>>385111896
Yes. People have changed and the internet has changed. The harsh reality of MMOs nowadays is, if you're not playing with friends you already know, then you're gonna have a bad time.

Why talk to people when you can look everything up online, when there are videos on youtube explaining your class and every instance and secret in the game? Why talk to people when the game only makes you do so for instances and literally nothing else? Why talk to people if people aren't going to talk about the game, and instead are going to spout memes or talk about politics and LGBT shit?

This is what people need to realize. Videogames didn't change, you did. People would fucking love the vast majority of MMOs out today ten years ago or so.
>>
one thing I never understood in new MMOs is what the point of a global cooldown is? can anyone explain to me why this is better than having everything on a separate timer?
>>
>>385112542
Its basically a more "predictable" version of animation locks.
>>
>>385112542
Because once you gather enough separate timers you're pretty much just cycling through non garbage skills until what you used first comes off cooldown.
>>
>>385096850
Heres something Ive never understood, even in vanilla WoW which wasnt even my first mmo by a long shot but it still turned me off of the game. Why do people like questing?

You have this entire open world full of mystery and yet you force me on this single path in order to get the most exp. Its pretty much the exact thing as killing mobs over and over again just with more downtime havnling to run errands for exp. Every zone starts out woth kill x and y when I could just explore around and experience it.

This always kills exploration for me because you realize anything that looks awesome in a zone is just a setpiece for another railroaded quest through said zone. You cant meet people randomly in a cave then decide to explore to see how far down you can go. Its just a singleplayer line to max level without any variation.

This encompasses pretty much 80% of all themepark wow clones I play and I hate it.
>>
>>385113890
so make every skill unique and have a good use? whats the point of making 30 skills to use when 25 of them are the same thing

in case you're still around, I use Mudfish

Mudfish only routes the data for the program (in this case DDO) through the vpn, leaving the rest of your connection untouched when doing other things. Mudfish will generally reduce ping rather than increase it to due to better routing.

$5 of data with mudfish should last you at least a year.

thats the result of tying exp into quest rewards. if quests are the way to level up then the rewards always have to be exp and a small amount of money or something trivial.

FFXI handled quests quite well I thought. Many had a story line and worthwhile items as rewards. quests were also completely optional as very few even gave exp as a reward. repeatable quests were the only real fetch quests

It's to act out as a character would. Not as you would. People who self-insert fundamentally tend to misunderstand roleplaying. If you're playing yourself, you're not playing a role, you're just... Being you.

No. Have sidequests for criminal characters, or traders, or socialites. Have them able to be finished in lawful and evil ways. And have them be more than kill 5 bears for their asses. You don't have to be the 'hero' in a quest. Stop calling them quests, even. Try something different.

People in MMOs don't want to be the hero anymore. They haven't for a long time, because they've done it so many fucking times now. It's boring.

>worse than warriors at damage
is this supposed to be an argument, warrior is a red (dps) class, alchemist is a blue (tank/support) class.

If you take an augment than alch enchant lasts basically as long as shield sage's does, except people have to run into the enchant zone instead of forcing it on everyone.

Alch has significantly more mobility than shield sage (who has zero air mobility and no dodge function) and higher damage than SS while having worse aoe threat generation and, depending on the type of enemy, potentially worse Torpor/sleep build up.

Alchemist is the only class that can turn things to gold and SS is the only one that can petrify things, however Alch doesn't give up a skill slot per debuff and has Torpor+Golden+debuff of choice (sleep or dizzy) built into their default kit whereas shield sage needs to use a skill slot for torpor infliction, skill slot for sleep infliction, etc.

The tradeoff is Shield Sage is significantly better (and is the best class in the game) at applying elemental debuffs, but this really only means they can apply freeze a lot faster since the other elemental debuffs are eh. Freeze isn't that hard to apply though.

Anyway

Alch
>Way better damage
>way better mobility
>more custom skill variety/options

Shield Sage
>Can generally apply status effects quicker
>Force your allies to get their weapons enchanted if they're shit
>applies elemental debuffs much faster
>ZERO mobility
>very limited custom skill options

Regardless of metagame Alchemist is just way more fun. With the new skills added they now have a Piledriver and a Hand Shotgun.

good news, only have to wait never for the western release!
>>
No other threads so I might post it here.

I had a hypothetical idea for an MMO and was wondering what /v/ thought of it.

Basically there are no classes and but you can specialize in certain roles by focusing on upgrading those stats.

Now here's where the fun part comes in: unlocking skills and abilities should be a rigorous and somewhat secretive process with limited "availability" at a given time.

I'll elaborate with a few examples:
>You want to be a generic knight
>Go to your largest city and sign up for military camp
>100 slots a month
>training is a series of quests with something like a schedule
>after you're done you'll be given basic soldier equipment, you'll have a knowledge of armed melee combat and you now have the option to do further military quests

>You want to be a mage
>Mage Academy has a steeper entry fee and only accepts 10 people every month and all slots are filled
>decide to try your luck somewhere else
>stumble upon secret necromancer cult
>given the option to join them
>if you accept, the next person who stumbles upon them won't be given this option because you've filled the only slot for the time period

This would lead to characters actually being unique and a result of the journeys the player has undertaken. You never quite know what the other player might have up his sleeve. Instead of making everyone similar and replaceable you'll be able to forge a character that's completely unique due to his range of skills he's acquired.

I would also base a lot of it around PvP where opposing factions (town guards and bandits for example) would have quests that involve disrupting other groups.

This would be great, as long as you have the same system for every other 'job' in the game.

Want to run/help at a tavern? Gotta find one with jobs available.

If it was made with pure combat in mind, people would get bored quickly. MMOs need a lot more, nowadays.

will be datamined, so the few remaining people actually playing your game will simply go down the list of things they want to play until they find one that's available. More likely they'll quit out of frustration.

Warrior is literally not a tank

>DPS
Warrior/Fighter/Hunter/Sorcerer/Seeker
>Tank
Alchemist/Shield Sage
>Healer
Spirit Lancer/Priest/Elemental Archer

Extreme mission queues default to (as in enforced by the game unless you purposely disable it) 1 tank, 2 dps and 1 healer class. Tanks are the only classes that can provide weapon enchants, status debuffs like torpor and are the only classes who can hold aggro.
Likewise healers are the only classes that can heal (wow) and reveal the enemies secret cores, which results in significantly faster kill times.

Warrior is the 'tankiest' DPS in that it can eat the most hits (at the cost of mobility) but it fulfills none of the requirements of the tank role as DDO defines it.

You can't have it both ways. Either it's restrictive enough to limit the amount of people who want to play something, or it's not. Likewise with the schedule, either it's a full on training regimen or it's just another daily quest like any other mmo.

If you make class obtaining quests randomly generated then either all the preset spots it can be are datamined or, if it's truly random, people complain because they want to play necromancer but the game says no fuck you go walk around and hope you come across it.

Neo-/v/ everyone. Do something else then.

You know how most good raiding guilds expect you to commit a bit of time if you actually want to stay in the guild?

Well it's like that except the game itself does it. You're not entitled to the best skill paths without being willing to work for them.

Warrior literally does not have a taunt, what the fuck did he mean by this?
Warrior has ZERO abilities that provoke the enemy into attacking them

>alchemists can tank
Alchemists wear shield sage armour (aka the HEAVIEST ARMOUR) and any enemy with an alchemy core is forced to target the alchemist (the more built up the cores are the more you solidify how long you have the aggro). You know how alch places these cores on enemies? By hitting them with literally ANY ATTACK.

Why do people like Snorefest and huge grindfest MMOs like FFXIV? That game has you running all over the got damn place. You spend more time traveling to your quest than actually running quest, especially the ones in the cities. I couldn't take it and quit because it was causing me to fall asleep.

Action MMOs like Vindictus on the other hand... are so fucking fun! I can't wait for Miri to release on the NA servers.
>>
>>385120174
There's already an MMO that requires the same level of dedication and yet it's still one of the best out there (EVE Online).

But I guess it's to be expected when the median age of EVE players is 30 while the average /v/ermin is a fucking toddler.
>>
>>385121043
Because MMO players don't want a game, they want a time-sink where they can shitpost and pretend to be girls.

FFXIV scores extra points by being very weeb and having a big name behind it.
>>
>>385120793
maybe we're having different discussions here but there's no reason your mmo wouldn't work mechanically but the entire point of mmo's (and games) is to make money

Financially, the type of mmo you describe would fail due to being extremely niche.

>>385121048
EVE is boring
>>
>>385121043
>Mom look at all the cool anime moves I can do

People like you don't actually want to play MMOs. You basically want an anime fighting game but with many players on screen.
>>

>>
Is this where people go to shill their obscure Korean/Chinese mmos?
>>
>>385120793
thats fine, but put all the work in at once so people can do it at their own pace. what possible reason other than artificial walls to keep players subscribed longer would there be for such a system as he/you were describing?

hell, put in 30 quests that you have to do in a month would be a better way of going about it than requiring someone's attention part of a day every day for a month.
>>
>>385121048
Eve is not doing great, and it had to go F2P.

Eve was never big and has always been a super niche game.
>>
>>385119412
This is one of the most hilariously bad "ideas guy" posts i've seen in a long time. Literally the only thing you've proposed for your "hypothetical mmo" is a particularly strict entrance requirement to join certain classes. At least most idea guys have the decency to think beyond the one gimmick that made them shit their filth onto the thread. Whats the fucking combat like? Are there gathering classes? Do you understand that the things you've theorised would at best be a small footnote on a game, not the main focus?

I will not dispute any of this. That's why it's just a hypothetical.

>>
>>385121227
FFXIV had the same exact name as it did during 1.0 patch and it flopped massively in both sales and reviews.

Ever since they reboot it in 2013, it's been a massive success and just recently received a brand new expansion. What went right for FFXIV despite it's previous setbacks while other WoW clones died or failed miserably to the point of going F2P?
>>
>>385101526
It all comes down to the grind.

See, at no point in Super Mario does the game stop you between levels and say "HEY, YOUR NUMBERS ARE TOO LOW FOR THIS NEXT LEVEL GO BACK TO THE LAST LEVEL AND JUMP ON ALL THE ENEMIES FOR TWO HOURS. THEN YOU CAN PLAY THIS NEXT LEVEL."

You move through the game at your own pace, and the only thing that stops your forward progression is your own skill. MMOs can't afford to allow that. They need to slow you down so that you keep up your subscription. Allowing game progression to be dictated by the skill of the individual means the very best players run out of content the fastest, grow bored and move on to new games.

The problem inherent in the genre isn't the RPG, it's crafting the RPG to pad out time and force players to replay the same content over and over.
>>
>>385121474
Theres no agenda. Why are you paying monthly when you dont know when/if/what kind of content will come out? Devs should just sell expansions, and increase cost if need be. Right now they're doing it just because they can. WoW is entirely paid for in box sales. The sub fee and shop is just icing on the cake for them, but people act like they need it.
>>
>>385096850
Nah, I have friends who are willing to play MMO's however none meet the quota, they're either garbage games where you just stand in one place casting 24/7 or when they're centered around action corridor based garbage

The only thing close to the ideal MMO is Dragon's Dogma online but that shit is Jap only and no one wants to go through the hassle to actually get to play it
>>
>>385121657
Maintaining servers worldwide and paying the staff that host those servers isn't free.
>>
>>385121474
I'm saying that eventually you'll get tired of an MMO like any game, however at least with most games you only pay once.

Your paying into something that can change at anytime, like how WoW went from god-tier to garbage.

I know you make memories and shit but I'm pretty sure every MMO player at some point will start to regret how much they've spent.
>>
>>385121043

>>
>>385121801
It's not about the future you fucking faggot, it's about the now. Who gives a fuck about what's to come, as long I'm enjoying the current content I'm having fun.
>>
>>385122197
Plenty of mmos have regular content updates without a sub fee, some just as substantive as WoW or XIV. How come they apparently 'require' both a sub fee and cash shop?
>>
>>385120761
Adventuring flat out doesn't work in the modern due to things being datamined, wiki'd, optimized and minmaxed so quickly.

This is part of why so much hype is built up around newly launching mmo's (and expansions) and people take days off work/stay up all night playing new content because it's actually fresh and not everything is known.

Outside that brief launch period not using external resources with the game is flat out playing suboptimally and it will be more difficult to find players to do things randomly because 'Nah that quest doesn't give anything good' or 'Why would you bother doing that quest when you could use _____ leveling method which is way faster lmao'

People complain about newer mmo's not being social and blame the new generation and/or WoW's influence and/or casuals but I don't think anything specific is to blame, it's simply the progression of how easy it is to collate and share information now. When game's like Everquest and Ultima Online original released there was more community interaction because wiki's and online resources were relatively minimal compared to today, so you had to use in game methods to solve your issue. Now there are wiki's and guides for every literally who game (Dragon's Dogma Online has an english wiki for example) so using external resources is just being efficient.

This is an issue that can't really be fixed outside of unrealistically massive and complex games where there's a mindboggling amount of stuff/mechanics to discover.
>>
>>385122329
The content updates in a buy to play game like guild wars are really small. They save the updates for the paid expansions. Also f2p games have it worse by having pay to win elements and very shitty third world communities infesting Western servers.

>>
>>385122357
I remember playing WoW in a net cafe with a poor grasp of english and having the time of my life exploring and then some people come over and tell me >Why are you doing that? You should be doing this

Datamining and Wikis is basically the modern version of that.
>>

It's true. A lot of the people that can't get into MMO or dislike MMOs are solo players. They get stuck at a wall that would be easy to bypass if they had a buddy to help them. MMOs have always been mostly about playing together rather than solo. It doesn't matter how good or bad a game is when you're playing with friends.
>>
>>385121043
The problem with "action instanced MMOs" is that, like many other kinds of online games, the combat itself is a bootleg version of a singleplayer game. Even if it have a decent gameplay, I don't feel interested in playing these for very long since they never have anything else to offer.
The whole positive aspect of these games are concentrated on your character: You are strong, flashy, sexy, can do crazy combos and shit. That is nice, but everything else around you is just mediocre. Enemies are dumber than your average musou fodder, stages are mostly boring and uninspired, aspects like music and world building are always mediocre, and so on.
What is the point of playing some shit like Kritika for its "fast paced combat and no time wasters" when replaying Metal Gear Rising for the 200th time will still be as fun as ever?

So,
>Why do people like Snorefest and huge grindfest MMOs like FFXIV
Because they have something else that singleplayer games rarely have, like professions, housing, visual customization, sense of long-lasting adventure with your character and the world around it, the good and old glorified chatroom aspect of it, etc. Plus all the positive gameplay aspects of it.
Not saying that all action online grindfests are as mediocre as Kritika. Games like Warframe have offers interesting features like the artstyle and setting, trading chat only (no auction houses), tons of different kinds of weapons to grind (and be disappointed with the final result), nice robutts (very rare nowadays), and so on. And the combat is also pretty neat.

Right in the nostalgia. Had no idea there was a Dreamcast game. Downloading that shit now.
Also, I've heard RoLW Online barely has any players.

>Community hate new players
>Instance matching will get you people who don't know how to play or roll their gear correctly
>Won't get into most LFG's because you won't have +15 gear which is super expensive to obtain
>PvP scene is non-existant
>Pretty much required to view a guide online to even understand how to gear properly
>Playerbase is slowly dwindling down
>same optimisation issues as when the game first released back in 2012, lucky to get 40fps in a current dungeon on the lowest possible settings

Elin thighs though.

Is this yet another asian grinder where you mow down enemies like in a musou?
>>
>>385128134
it does, and it's complete fucking garbage. it's a shitty browser style "mmo" that are dime a dozen grindy cash grabs you see on sites like kongregate. enemies you fight drop like 2-10 gold. the cheapest weapon costs 2200 gold. the damage upgrade brings you from 5-7 to 10-12.

and that horrible horrible fucking engrish.
>>
No one makes relaxed and comfy MMOs you can lay in bed and play with just the mouse anymore. I love my PSO2 but sometimes I want to relax and just click on things.

Factually untrue. It is much less common nowadays, but before, a lot of MMOs required teamwork and careful play from very early on.

Hell, in vanilla WoW, you couldn't go into most places alone even if you were the right level and well geared, let alone dungeons.

Are pso, gw1, and vindictus players too retarded to understand that when a market gets popular every marketer wants to be a part of the new thing. Its why every shitty indie game calls itself a roguelike despite having little to anything to do with rogue.

Like holy shit this isnt hard to figure out.
>>
>>385135138
Read the OP.

>>385135165
It's a big ass guild, so they probably aren't that cliquy.
It's just that there a split between the PvP and PvE guilds and the TS had shitloads of different channels. So you have groups of 2-3 players in all those channels and I don't want to intrude on them. So I just ask in guild chat if anybody minds if I would join their channel and if there's no reply I just don't.

God I wish I wasn't such an autist and approaching people would come naturally to me.

Gimme a MMO where I could grind the hell out of it, excluding Black Desert and Runescape

It's true. That's why I'm glad Pantheon will force you to group to do basically anything but 1v1 trash mobs. That way people will want me around even just as a warm body to take and deal damage.

Machinist is pretty fun, so is ninja. For starter classes I guess archer is fun, it becomes bard later on.
You can do all the jobs with a single character so you can just switch things up on the go as you feel like if you get the class quests for another job.

Im thinking between ESO and guild wars 2(if that is even alive). Anyone plays this shit?

Blade & Soul. As for Guild Wars 2, check /gw2g/ on /vg/ and make your own conclusion.
>>
>>385146204
ESO combat sucks but is otherwise ok
>>
>>385146204
I played both and strongly recommend you play neither, but ESO was a whole lot better. PvE plays like a choppy Skyrim with skills and arbitrary restrictions. PvP is pretty neat on a strategic level, but the actual gameplay is just classic MMO buttonmashing 99.9% of the time. The worst part in my experience is it ends up not working as a TES game because roleplaying if effectively penalized because the skill system encourages you to do everything if you want all of your abilities, which totally homogenizes your character. Then again some people do that in TES games too, maybe I'm weird. The biggest "real" issue I have with it is taking crafting seriously basically requires you to pay their optional sub fee, which is why I dropped it. Crafting is also a fuckhuge timesink waiting on progress bars that are best measured not in days, but weeks.
GW2 is utter trash that cashed in on the GW IP. They veered away from traditional MMO combat, poorly, and there's basically nothing about it that provides anything beyond the same modicum of entertainment... no, rather an uncolored sense of busyness and sensory occupation that writing this post does.
>>
>>385096850
MMOs suck because they have no end.

Start, development, finale.

If a game doesn't have that it's not a game.

You never log out of an MMO for the last time with a good feeling.

That's one of the worst parts. No matter how much you're loving the experience, that final time you log out will be bitter.
