I use to have a raging boner for this game as a kid, played it for hours and hours on GameCube. I still love the music and overall atmosphere, but I just can't get into it anymore, it feels especially grindey, even moreso than most MMOs of the era, probably due to the lack of PvP and distinct items/weapons. Maybe I'll get back into it one of these days, though.

Not at all. Dragon'sDogmaOnline exists. So does MonsterHunter Online and Frontier (both of them crap compared to mainline MonHun games, but still far superior to the typical MMO), and since PSO has some gun-wielding classes I'll also throw Destiny in here.

But like I said, doesn't matter if PSO2 had god-tier combat, it has nothing I want from PSO on a visual and audio and mood standpoint.

PSO2's core combat is fun as hell, client-side hit detection (meaning no lag when you dodge or attack), lots of cancels, many attacks have i-frames or guard points that aren't very forgiving, meaning when you dodge an attack like this, you feel really good about it. Levelling is fast since you can buy 75% boosters with in-game money really cheap, which means you unlock your classes' special skills quicker. Eg. Fighter has one that ups his damage significantly but drops his HP to 25%, and in a game where you can get 2-shot by bosses, that's a very scary proposition. Ranged gameplay is easier, but if you want to do a shitton of damage with a rifle or bow, you have to go into third person mode and really focus on the head. There's a lock-on if you're a babby (or console player) but maximal damage comes from manual aiming at the weakpoints. Take a look at some gameplay videos, mainly Fighter (quick, dual wielding weapons) and Gunner (matrix-style close combat with twin machine guns). If you want a ranged class, it'd have to be Ranger (rifle) or Braver (Bow).

This thread is making me sad. I used to play PSO2 every day for like 4 years, but ep4 ruined it to the point where I only get on once every couple of months. I don't understand how they fucked up so bad.

For me, ep4 and 5 give me the same vibe, which is basically, they have a literal whole universe to explore, but settle on a whole episode on earth, (tokyo and las vegas) and now a whole episode with a generic medieval fantasy setting.

Ep4 was definitely a certain kind of dumb, the basic enemies had a really cool idea, music was great, like I said, but the setting and the plot was really just generic garbage. I fear ep5 will go the same way except worse music.

Agree with everything except star gems and class balance. I like that you have a currency that can be earned in-game that gives you access to (some) paid stuff. Not like any of the paid stuff is good outside of inventory expansions and collection card slots, though. As for class balance, I think it's in a fairly decent place, and the buffs/nerfs coming with ep5 will certainly help. Now if they'd update the older weapons and PAs and skill trees a bit (which they are kind of doing with type-0s), it would be even better. Newer classes are way too user-friendly. delete summoner and all of it's shit fucking items though

Honestly, I could put up with all of it, if they would just bring trading back. There's nothing to do outside of EQs now to get geared up. Back in the day, you could also play the market, AQ, or TA for meseta, then buy gear off somebody that had extras. Seriously, I'd even buy premium for it.

what do you mean, different weapons have different ways to block/parry. Like swords you can just flat out block where with twin daggers you have to attack at the right time to get the parry invuln.

This is probably true but I played through it all in single player on GameCube when it was still new and I had a blast. I was still in high school and without a job at the time so I appreciated whatever shit I got but I had some pretty fond memories of that game.

Unlike PSPo2, classes have fixed actions and limited access to weapons. The action Guard (and upgrades) is exclusive to Hunters and their weapons. In PSPo2, any Force can pick up a shield, and use the "secondary weapon" command on 2-handers to defend themselves (except 2-hand force weapons, since it is used for extra tech slots).

It's not about being unique, it's about pacing. Combat have a clear progression: Kill shit, open door, kill more shit. Simple, but effective if handled right, and PSO, PSPo2 and even PSU did it decently well.
In PSO2, encounters appear to be interesting at first since you never know when they will appear. But, because of this, level design suffers. Sometimes you get big stages with practically nothing on them, so you mostly walk around and hope to find the exit (this is specially annoying for COs). And then you have these random events that just spawns a door in front of you and give fuck all for rewards, essentially wasting your time, (especially because most monsters on their own give shit drops and low EXP, so the real reward is found on boss fights).
