I watched a bit of the anime, although I didn't play the NES game so I don't know if maybe the story in the NES game is less insane. But the story I rmember is that this soccer genius kid with superhuman soccer abilities thinks that the soccer ball (the concept, not the actual ball) is his best friend "heart of the cards" style because a soccer ball saved his life when he was like 2 years old by cushioning the blow when he got hit by a car (never mind that he got hit by a car because he bounced onto the road on that same soccer ball, I guess). And his biggest rival is some guy who can kick a soccer ball hard enough to make a hole on a wall. The story in the localization makes less sense than this? How? Are they all aliens?
