"Speed"run
>>
It's typically a game that takes over 40 hours to beat and has multiple discs that prevent massive level/dungeon skipping. What the hell were you expecting. I actually really enjoyed the FFVII run at SGDQ.
>>
>>385086990
>What the hell were you expecting
Not OP, but for them to not include such a lengthy run at a speed run event?
>>
>>385087072

>>

a game that is actually good to watch. what is next? FFXII PS2 version "speed"run. just fuck off.
massive, grind heavy that takes 8 hours to complete is not a fucking speed run you make people watch.
>>
>>385087380
Nobody is saying it isn't skilled you fucking spastic.

It's almost as if the speed run event is intended to be entertaining and nobody outside a handful of mega-autists actually want to watch an 8+ hour run? The average viewer finds it boring and they receive less donations. There's little to no reason to include runs of this length on a live streamed event.
>>
>>385086676
No single game run should be over 2 hours unless it's 100%. These retarded jrpg runs are a huge nail in the speedrun tranny coffin
>>
>>385087380
speedrun events aren't your own personal little stream, it's a marathon where people put on a show by playing a game well. don't be surprised when no one wants to sit around for 8 hours and watch you play one game that doesn't hold anyone's interest for 8 hours
>>
>>385087682
>speedrun events aren't your own personal little stream
They aren't, and it turns out that there are people watching them that like to see JRPG's.

The run is how far in now?

Let's look at the numbers in a few hours time. Anyone who is currently watching will get bored of it by then, and anyone new who enters will not want to watch a run that is half way through with another 4 fucking hours to go

>>

>nobody outside a handful of mega-autists actually wants to watch a speedrun event

>>
I actually agree with OP. In the context of trying to maximize donations they really are dumb to include such a mind numbing viewer losing type game. Nothing is stopping somebody from just watching their favorite JRPG be speed-ran as optimally as possible on Youtube or something. It's really odd how rabidly some of you guys are defending an 8 hour speedrun that hurts the objective of the event and, arguably, even goes against the very spirit of a speedrun.
>>
Gotta go fast

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5A_36JxUms
>>
>>385088958
Speed is a relative term in this context if you're autistic. The human mind already has an approximation of what is a short amount of time and what is a long amount of time. It doesn't matter if they cut the game down to 8 hours, 8 hours to the average person is still a long fucking time. And guess what? The average person also finds it boring as shit. No one benefits, not the viewers, and not the event organizers trying to raise donations.

Oh, would you look at that - the stream has dropped 419 viewers since this post 17 minutes ago. >>385088037
>>
>>385089318
Don't bother trying to reason with them. I love all speed-run formats with a passion but I can't defend an 8-hour speedrun in this context. Makes absolutely no sense. Must be trolls, rabid JRPG loyalists, or the actual speedrunners themselves
>>
>>385089181
I think it's really weird how you're so rabidly getting angry about something you don't have to watch, which has no effect on you, and are pretending to care about the charity aspect when you've never donated or volunteered for any charity in your life, and spend most of your life on the internet looking to hurt make fun of and hopefully hurt every random person you come across.
>>
>>385089318
If 8 hours is a "long fucking time" then what do you define 80,000 hours as?
>>
>>385089578
>then what do you define 80,000 hours as?

3 JRPG speed runs back-to-back
>>
>>385086676

It was vetted by whoever is running the event, but yeah it's really stupid. There's just too much downtime in these really long runs and Legitimately think it's extremely stupid when you could of had a dozen or more runs in that time frame.

>>385086990
Let me ask you a serious question. In a FF8 speed run how much of it is interesting glitches or displays of skill? I bet there's a lot in there, but even you have to admit that there's probably 7+ hours of boring horseshit.

If you are into that kind of thing that's great, but that's elephant condom market levels of niche. Probably not the smartest move when your goal should be to make money for charity not get half a day of stream exposure.
>>
>>385089318
I gotta say, you're the autist.
It's like saying marathon runners or tour de france cyclists are slow because they take hours/days to complete a race compared to a sprinter.

No, it's that they have further to go.

>Holy shit, you took 2 hours to finish your marathon? You slow ass, the sprinters finished their race in under 10 seconds!

>>
>>385089636
Even if all 3 of those games took as long to run as this ff8 run that would only be about 24 hours, less than .0003% of 80,000 hours.

Anon, I think you're being intentionally uncooperative because you know your viewpoints are actually unreasonable and cannot stand up to any level of scrutiny.
>>
>>385086676
They schedule these at odd hours and people jump in and out to see their favorite game.

Some people donate during these just because "I like that runner" or "That's my favorite game, my childhood, etc."

It's a lot better than indie game no one gives a shit about, or non-kazio romhack. Note they only do this shit for stuff like final fantasy, which is incredibly popular both in the normal gamer world and speedrunner world.
>>
>>385089739
>It's like saying marathon runners or tour de france cyclists are slow

Except no one is saying that? No one is saying the runner is slow and should pick up his pace, they are saying the overall RUN ITSELF is too slow to be shown at a live streaming event if they want to attract more viewers.

Let's use your tour de france example - How many people do you honestly believe watch tour de france all the way through? How many people watch it all the way through and then say "Boy, I'm sure glad I watched this instead of [insert sport game that only takes 2 hours here]". I can assure you it's not that many people mate.
>>
>>385089857
Okay but that's a little different from a livestreamed speedrunning event attempting to accrue donations. I too enjoy long speedruns when nothing matter or is on the line. Also I'm not watching Europoor Faggot Assembly I just like this thread a lot
>>
>>385089885
What charity.
>>
>>385089889
Sorry asshole, different guy. Just saw a huge flaw in your logic.

How about this: If two cars travel at 150mph and one has to travel a mile and the other has to travel 500 miles, is the second car slower because it finishes hours after the first?
>>
>>385090027
The semen charity for your mom. It was a sizeable donation
>>
>>385087554
>Nobody is saying it isn't skilled you fucking spastic.
Yeah. Neither does the person you quoted.
>>
>>385090005
Then what you're saying is that the event is too "long", not that the speedrun is "slow".

Distance and speed are two different things.

If you want to say that it's too long for a single segment, which I think is what you're trying to say, then sure. I'll can agree with that.
>>
>>385090119
So you have in fact never donated to charity or done anything kind for another human being in your life, and only pretended to care about that as an excuse to complain about a group of strangers on the internet streaming a game that you don't care about.

I mean I knew that from the beginning, but it's nice of you to admit it.
>>
>>385089889
Not him, but the reason some people consider chess a "sport" is the massive amount of stamina it takes to make the proper mental decisions for hours on end (not that chess games last several hours, but the strain of a tournament causes the same issue).

Chess players literally have to be careful about their eating and sleeping habits to prepare for this, and the best (magnus) has lost a tournament because of sickness the weak before a not-huge tourny before.

Speedruns are no different from chess in this respect, especially in rng heavy games where you may have to know several routes if something bad happens
>>
>>385089948
Yes, let's try to accurately assign phrases such as "long fucking time" used in a facetious way, to an exact time value and set up some kind of standardized scale for these terms - and when others don't comply accuse them of being intentionally uncooperative because I have no other way of defending an 8 hour run.

>>
>>385090447
I think we have several people itt trying to argue different points.

Obviously the runners are doing something "fast" relative to the normal playtime of the game, and it is impressive, but the issue that the "this shouldn't be here" crowd is raising is that this isn't useful to the overall point of the event: getting money for a charity.

Personally, I think it does raise a fair amount of money given people duck in and out to watch their favorite game and throw money at it for that reason alone, so I think Op's point is a non-issue
>>
>>385090536
Ok, in what scenario would you say "Heh, not fast enough" to someone and not have a "I am more skilled than you" disposition?
>>
>>385090297
Yeah but we're talking about video games not chess. The exact point of a speedrun marathon is to catch people's interest by showing video games beaten in a short amount of time, to get them donating money because they like the event, so the money can go to charity. Literally the entire point is to get viewers. If it doesn't get viewers, it has failed.

"The game that took me several hours was beat in half an hour" is impressive, and gets views.
"The game that took me several hours was beat in the time I spend at my job daily" isn't impressive, and doesn't get views.

I should say the same to you. It's called sandbagging. When someone is trying to dodge questions that would obviously disprove their viewpoints by shitposting, intentionally ignoring their shitpost and continuing to post in a serious tone messes with them and usually makes them angry, because they were expecting to magically worm their way out of the argument by being lolsorandum.

>>
>>385090648
I think you're wrong about what matters in events like these.

I don't think it matters much how many people are viewing, rather it matters how many people are donating, and I don't know if I'd agree that the two are 100% related. I think people donate to their favorite games, because they like the runner, because there is a serious level of skill involved or because the run is going hilariously wrong (like bonesaw's j&d run).

Ignoring 2 and 4, 1 and 3 apply in this case. It takes an amazing amount of skill to do an 8 hour run because of the stamina thing I mentioned. That + final fantasy means that a fairly large amount of people are likely to donate to this. More so than they would to like 3 no-name games, which would probably occupy this time spot as this isn't a "prime time money making game" time slot.

>>
>>385090970
That was the point, he was supposed to answer "there is no answer", because speed is in fact a relative term, which he seems deadset on denying. If he's denying speed is relative, that means he has to believe speed is instead objective and can be objectively assigned values, and that things such as "how long it would normally take vs how long it takes the speedrunner" or any other context don't matter. Yet he was not able to answer that, because there is no answer, because he's wrong. But this is 4chan, when you're caught being stupid and unreasonable you don't just give up and admit you were wrong, you double down and shitpost harder than ever until you were the person who proved you wrong via attrition, then sit back and feel proud of yourself as if it means you were right all along.

>>385091019
Well, at the end of the day the FF8 speedrun is still going to happen, so you're certainly not accomplishing or convincing anyone of anything, and similar speedruns will continue to be run at every event for the foreseeable future. I suppose you're welcome to spend the entire 8 hour period in this thread bitching about it if you want but I don't intend to waste such a long ass amount of time.
