I have a linguistics quiz for you, /v/.

A-kun doesn't understand Japanese.
A-kun played 10000 hours worth of Japanese games with Japanese audio using English subtitles.
That's equivalent to playing 4 hours a day for 2500 uninterrupted days, or roughly 7 years.

Is A-kun able to understand Japanese now?
( Y / N )
>>
No, you can't really learn anything more than a few words from doing this, and only if you are intentionally paying attention.

However, 7 years of studying Japanese intentionally with proven methods would be enough to reasonably become passable at understanding, reading and to a lesser extent, writing and speaking Japanese.

Depends on how much of Japanese you expect him to know. He should have learned a lot of it

10000 hours of anime is better though

it makes it easier to actually learn from that point on, being already familiar with the sound, and phonetics of the language. As kids we learn the basics of our mother tongue just by listening to those around us.

I learned English mostly by playing video games with English voices and subtitles in my language. Then I learned the rest from going online and trying to talk to people.
I was always way ahead of my peers in school in English and by age 16 I had the Proficiency 2 level exam thingy done. I never went to a language academy or opened a book.

I don't see how if I had done it for Japanese the same wouldn't have happened, though I suspect I still wouldn't know how to write or read any of the three squid scribbles Japanese has.

no cause the translation reorganizes what is being said so he cant exactly speak or understand it, but he can pick up phrases and say phrases back.

basically once he has to run into a fluently speaking japanese person who doesnt use any common phrases hes heard before, he will immediately be stumped.

its kinda like how you understand kimochi or kawaii but that doesnt mean you can understand all japanese.

english is more straight forward. You can watch our cartoons and play games with subtitles and quickly pick that shit up. Even if you cant contruct sentences perfectly, you can still speak english cause it just works. It can be mangled and bastardized and work.

But fucking other languages need you to be fucking exact.

>He is hearing only sounds, with no understanding of what these sounds are or represent, or the environments that they exist in
>Unless anon has a backing in linguistics, he is unlikely to have the mental tools to compile and sort this information into usable tidbits on his own, and can only repeat sounds

He probably does have an ear for certain words or phrases, and might even have a nice vocabulary, but he likely has only minimal understanding of sentence structure and grammar. If you dropped him into Japan tomorrow, he could probably communicate his needs enough to get help, but not enough to actually have conversations with people.
And this is assuming he doesn't sound like a complete freak because he's using a character for his vocal standard that is absolutely not the sort of person you would run into in real life.

If anon were a year old, this would still not work, since tests have proven that infants do not pick up languages they only hear. Language immersion requires actual human contact to work in the absence of the sort of technical training to work around it.
Hearing sounds is not enough, and it has even been hypothesized that "language" learned in this way is not treated as language by the brain, but as song.

>Subtitles can be inconsistent
With a large amount of content consumed, this isn't really an issue. While subs can be inconsistent at times, it is rare that they're all inconsistent in the same way, so what 1% of the content fails at teaching you, the 99% will make up for it.
>Certain, vital material for day to day existence is not frequently communicated in video games
Really depends on the variety of content you consume. If you throw in VNs and anime to the mix, you should be learning the essential stuff pretty well.
>He knows very little for certain, and has to guess most of it.
Yes, but repetition turns the guessing into fairly certain knowledge.
>He is hearing only sounds, with no understanding of what these sounds are or represent, or the environments that they exist in
You're not listening to an audiobook though. Video games are visual media.

The main point here is what is defined as understanding a language. If you simply watch a lot of anime and play games with japanese audio, you can develop really good listening comprehension for the language, but going farther than that with no additional practice would be quite difficult. After spending thousands of hours on anime, I can watch a lot of anime and other tv shows raw, while understanding most of it. You pick up grammatical structures too. Obviously, I still run into words I don't know, that I either need to guess from the context (fairly accurately) or look up. On the other hand, actually writing or speaking Japanese is basically impossible for me. Even reading is more difficult than listening for me, not because of kanji or anything, but because I understand a word more easily if I hear it than if I read it. This is why I often need to read things out loud to understand them.
>>
I learned English entirely from watching movies and playing vidya but I guess that's because kids learn that kind of shit better (apparently their brains are more malleable or something). If only I was also a weeaboo as a kid, I could perhaps know three languages now.
