It's mostly that farming to start out in WotD is a pain

Start WotS, farm some revenants and you have a full divine 150 set that you upgrade while you play the game. I finished the game with a 150+7 set and weapons

Start out WotD, farming revenants is worthless and getting pieces of sets or weapons you want is almost impossible and soul matching is bizarrely expensive

The Diablo loot system ruined my enjoyment of this game.

I haven't played any of the DLCs yet because I put 100 hours into NG and NG+. I really hope they're working on Nioh 2, it's amazing how much similar yet different it is from Souls.

All items that dropped for me so far have had the same set bonus, even random ones that weren't parts of any set before.

Living weapon build + odachi. Dump all your stat points to odachi damage (heart, stamina, strength) and some onmyo for weakness, carnage, extraction, protection, steel talismans. Choose one of the following spirits: double dogo, enko, suzaku or masamune's dragon and an armor set that compliments it. Max stamina first to wear heavy armor while being below 70% weight. Also, fall below critical hp threshold before going into LW because then it lasts longer. I breezed through Way of the Demon like that.

If you want discord, normal elemental balls are better because you have way more of them and they take less slots.
The news fireballs do shit damage, the earth traps seem to do more damage than the other spell but still suck, The new water and thunder spells have difficulty touching moving targets for some reason.
Wind arrows are the fucking worse of the new attack spells, only 3 of the arrows will touch the targets.
For the buffs only the leech one is good even if the life drain is pretty big.

idk I'm only level 311. I just did the very first mission on way of the wise with my ninja loadout. Regular mobs in the level don't seem to have much more HP, but they hit hard as all fuck. The executioner boss though, even with weakness debuff and storm kunais to his back he took quite a while to go down. >200 drops were also constant, and +19 divines were pretty frequent too. I think if you have a decently made build from way fo the demon way of the wise won't be too bad, especially since you can rapidly level all you gear up.

You can get a very decent set of gear without going full korean grind. The people complaining about this are the ones who forged their complete set of gear with 7 slots and starred skills and painstakingly rerolled every stat to be flawless while levelling it up to +20. Then they absolutely obliterate wotd. You can still stomp wotd with +17 or 18 gear with <7 slots. Getting that is not really a chore and pretty cheap overall if you don't use high tier umbracite, you can make do with spirit iron. I did that and I don't feel like my efforts were wasted. I'll go for an autstic 100% perfect build for a few different combat styles once dlc3 drops though. hopefully pure omnyo builds are in a better place by then.

Co-op or twilight missions

They let you select from a list what you can put on a piece of equipment in the reforge menu, they are also the best modifier you can get most of the time. For the best items you just try and get a drop that has good star effects like (skill) +25% damage and use umbracite to fill it up afterwords.

I already got one with throwing damage 2x as well. I tried using it on the first boss but it didn't work. I'm rubbish at parry timings usually though so idk if it's just me or if you can do it to bosses. The window of opportunity seems tiny though, parrying at least is worth the critical damage you cna do. reflecting shots is sort of not worth it. might be an easy way to take out cannon yokai though.
