Gen 4 starters are the best in my opinion. They're all good and valuable as party members and have and strong arguments can be made for all of them. Chimchar line is one of the only fire types you'll be seeing. Piplup line has extremely nice typing and coverage. Torterra admittedly isn't as good as the others but that does not deter the fact that he's great to have.

Because in all honesty fire type is garbage in playthroughs. Let's think about what it's good against: Bug, Steel, Grass, Ice. You won't be seeing Steel and Ice a whole lot, meaning it's only really good for bug and grass. Seeing as how you're going to want a flying type anyways for Fly, and that fighting types are more useful because seemingly 80 percent of NPCs use normal type, while also covering steel, ice, rock, and dark.

Bottom line is that fire type is just outclassed in runs and there's no "real" reason to use it unless you like the pokemon.

I would've been fine putting Gen 4's starters up there with Gen 1 and 3, but the Chimchar line is to reliant due to the region's lack of other fire types. Plus, I don't find Monferno's design particularly appealing. Still, all the other designs look great though, their final evolutions are fantastic, and I really like how they end up having typings that put them at both advantages and disadvantages with one another.

The Johto region is still relatively barren, has a terribly inconsistent level curve a third into the game, and has very slow gameplay similar to D/P or the console Pokemon games. Anyone else love Venusaur's design? Also Giga Drain, Sludge Bomb, Substitute and a few other tricky moves work well with chlorophyll. Too bad it's coverage is weak overall but still my favourite gen 1 starter. Sceptile favourite overall.
