If you want to enjoy the story? Of course
I mean it needs a lot more than say an action game or something
But compared to other story-based games, not as much. DQ typically has furigana so you get plenty of help with kanji, and it's not like the stories are overly complicated

You don't need to be a moon god, but you need a certain level of proficiency to be able to sit back and comfortably play an RPG without looking up every other word or be lost.

Dragon Warrior games tend to be irritatingly vague sometimes with telling you where you need to go. So if you aren't able to properly read the hints then you will be lost as fuck.
