I can tell you what happened to Nintendo considering I've been around them for since the NES days. Nintendo's focus audience use to be people like myself who wanted to just play games and not be treated like kids. There's something to be said about the feeling of games then and now. Even though Mario was marketed as a children's game, the company at the time didn't have a problem giving a less casual experience. Though you can say this was most likely a passover effect from when they were in the arcade business. Then as time went on, Nintendo started to make their games easier as their image gotten a wider appeal. Fast forward to 2000, and people like myself are already in high school. We've been exposed to the playstation, sega, and the pc. We've already gotten a breadth of experience. So when we look to Nintendo to see if they will give out anymore great games, we realize that Nintendo stopped catering to people like myself. In a way, they never catered to us once they found a bigger, reliable audience. The situation is a little complex with third parties, and thats only because Nintendo is stubborn and Japanese. But by the time of the Wii, they became a different company. They no longer made games for people who grew up from the nes.

Yes, nintendo is currently okay. They don't need people like myself, the old gamer guard, to keep them successful. They can just make easier games that just focus on making the person feel good and they continue to sell their products. That's a reality I have had to come to accept. The Wii absolutely killed anything Nintendo had left as far as credibility went.

Wii was alright but it was the beginning of the end. Now HD gaming means that Nintendo has to play it super safe and only pay attention to their big moneymakers or create multiplayer games they can milk for years ala Blizzard.
