I think Marty is a great character, because he offers a moral dilemma. Most characters are built on what they have done, and their moral choices, but it's not often we see a protagonist going for vengeance decades later, when the person has managed to realize their sins and accepted what they did was awful.
Is it worth punishing someone when they have punished themselves enough? Marty had been living in a cave by himself, probably for decades, and most likely only thought about how his son hates him, and that he more or less killed his daughter.

What Brad did DOES make sense, I just meant to point out that it is a interesting moral dilemma. His want to reform could cause someone to view his character very differently in the final moments, or even view Brad as a worse person because of it. Or not. He is a good character because he is believable, and has a sensible conclusion, and leaved the player with a variety of possible interpretations.
I like LISA's writing overall, but the DLC was a lot worse on that front. Buddy was not as interesting of a character to see the game out of. Brad's inner turmoil and completely fragile mentality made him a much more suitable protagonist.
