Why does it feel like I'm not playing a Final Fantasy game?

Because its not a main line final fantasy game. Its a spinoff that was reworked into a main final fantasy game.

Because you havent played the actual series and are only comparing it to a few games. Final Fantasy has always been about trying to reinvent itself.

XV feels like the natural progression of XII (if the other members had gambits at least) that just never got fleshed out.

That said, XV is one of the poorer games, but still better than II or XIII

Because the various FF teams go so out of their way to do something different with each new FF game that the series has lost all of its roots. Final Fantasy XIV is basically the only game in the last 15 years which has attempted to appeal to past fans.
