>le pop culture references xD

Go ahead, I'll wait.
>>

Fallout 3 is the best fallout game. you cant prove me wrong
>>
>>385057218
literally just a shittier version of 4
>>
>>385056930
The master is a better antagonist than Richardson/Horrigon

Also temple of trials is tedious for veterans and hard for newbies

I like fallout 2 better myself because it actually had enough content, but even I can't write those off.
>>
>>385056930
No Katja.
>>
>>385057423
but you can write off companions not even working correctly in 1?
>>
>>385056930
Fallout 1 is the road warrior to Fallout 2's thunderdome
>>
>>385057520
That only makes FO2 better, Katja was the worst companion FO1 had to offer because by the time you get to her you'll probably be fighting super mutants that will shred her apart before she can even stumble towards them
>>
>>385057542
They don't really work right in 2 either. I think they only got their shit together in tactics.

I'm not trying to say 1 is better, I'm just playing devils advocate and offering reasons why people could prefer it.
>>
Fallout 2 is fun but the tedious fucking beginning kills any desire to replay it.
What the fuck were they thinking?

How fucking hard is it ? I'm Chinese and the game's default language isn't even native to me any single bit and yet I learn and completed it flawlessly. My pure ching chong potato friend who fails "Engilish Spelring" learned and improve his English because of fallout. That was like nearly 18 years ago.

>balancing all over the fucking place
>too many half-assed areas that have the barest skeleton of interactivity and NPCs (Broken Hills, San-Fran, NCR)
>car detracts from atmosphere, lets you cruise around the wastes at mach 2 while you trip over fuel cells
>less compelling story, just get the niggas in your tribe to move to a place where crops actually grow or trade with other settlements
>weaker start, not even counting ToT you're fucked over if you chose guns until you're halfway through the rat den or steal a bunch of shit
While FO2 delivers more content, it's mostly fucking shit. One of 1's strengths is its brevity, it doesn't try to overextend its writing and then have to cover its ass with le pop culture references xD.

I was going to list a shit ton of reasons, but then I noticed that you said Fallout 2 was better, not 1. Carry on.
>>
Fallout 2 is the better game. But at the same time I feel like it misses out on a lot of what the 1st did so good. The 1st had an atmosphere unmatched. The wasteland is oppressive , lonely, and you can't help but feel like something is even more wrong (super mutants). And you're just thrown into it without any idea of whats out there. Just listen to this OST.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SefxmOv-88M
Shivers every time. Sure there's people in the wasteland but there's something so surreal about it, how there's just literally nothing in between all these little towns. And how in these little towns nobody is aware of the massive threat that slowly comes their way. The super mutants.
They were actually scary in 1 especially before they are fully revealed. Fallout 1 just stands out more to me.
>>
>>385057662
this
>>
I think Fallout 1 is better because the atmosphere is more tense and it truly captures the feeling that you're an ant against all odds. You're really just thrown into this world meeting different type of monsters, villages, and people. The deathclaws and mutants are also menacing foes, both of which are gone in 2. By the time you get to 2, most of the place is civilized and you have all these factions. It just has a different feeling to the game. 2 also has a similar main quest, so it feels like more of the same. Some of the sections also aren't that interesting. Like getting on a ship to stop the president from sending a vaccine. Compared to the hole where you learn all this lore and have this tense gameplay from the radiation and buildup from the NPCs and story.

>tfw I liked Thunderdome the best

Every time I had to give up my weapons in New Vegas, I thought of that scene in Thunderdome where Mel Gibson unloads dozens of guns on his way into barter town.
In fact, I wish post apocalyptic stories would borrow more from Thunderdome and less from Road Warrior.

It's another place where 1 trumps 2. It's explained that everyone in your vault is gonna fucking die if you don't get that waterchip, adding a sense of urgency. You're not here to smell the roses and shoot geckos for a few years while your retarded tribe is supposedly starving to death but actually perfectly fine, you're out on a mission to save what's practically your family. You either succeed, or you don't, while in 2 there's no benefit to rushing the GECK. Regardless of what you do, everyone in Arroyo gets snatched up or killed by the Enclave.
>>
>>385059343
Back then me and my friends are like 12 when we first play fallout 2, we have to figure out most of the words via paperback dictionaries and we have no idea how WRPG works. It was worth it and even more when we check the word "cinnamon" flavor from an "object". Next level was Icewind dale 2. None of us went back to JRPG after those days.
>>
>>385059971
Also one other thing really stands out to me from 1 and that's that your character is literally just some guy. There's nothing special about him, just the guy in the vault who is at the right age. And this vault dweller somehow is tasked to stop a invasion of some random shitty towns by 9 foot tall, 600 pound, immortal mutants carrying 200 pound machine guns. It's both badass and terrifying.

>>385056930
In a word: focus. As Mitch Gitelman once said, "Focus equals quality." Fallout, though more experimental and unrefined than Fallout 2, is much more focused. It has a much stronger sense of tone, and it's the only game in the entire series besides New Vegas to completely satisfy the core design goals the original team had in mind when making it.

The abundance of pop culture references in Fallout 2 is symptomatic of the game's deeper flaws - its development was more compartmentalized than Fallout's, so it feels more disjointed. Where Fallout is clearly a thoroughly modern story, Fallout 2 seems to struggle with not knowing whether it's trying to emulate Chaucer or Conrad. Fallout 3 definitely introduced far too many 'romantic' influences (which were then doubled down on with direct references to Sir Thomas Malory in Fallout 4) further pissing in the pool, but the problem had already started with Fallout 2.

This is not to say that Fallout 2 is a bad game, or that it doesn't possess unique merits of its own, or that none of its additions are good. No, it is a good game, it does possess unique merits and it does add good things. However, it also added bad things that only got worse when they were elaborated on by later, less skilled, writers.
