I once had some mole thing that was particularly spiky in my neck. I cut it out with a scissor and my neck looks fine. I wonder if you could do the same with those dude's eyelid moles. Is there any danger to doing that? If not, why doesn't everyone do it?

>Sadly, I don’t listen to game music, because with a few exceptions, I don’t enjoy playing games. I treat them as a visual medium. They’re something I view rather than play. Thus, when composing music, I think about what approach I should take musically not in regard to games, but in regard to visual media.

>That said, if you’ll allow me to offer my thoughts on the matter, it feels like everything is being glossed over by orchestral sounds. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not attacking composers. It’s a more fundamental problem than that. It’s about whether game creators want to make games or mock-movies.

>Movies have specialized staff, often with decades of accumulated experience. When game creators take a movie scene we vaguely recognize (including the music), imitate it with all the clumsiness of a novice, and drop it into a game, it’s only going to look cheesy and irritate players. Don’t you think?

Sounds like a reasonable perspective to me.

But "Orchestra Sickness" hasn't really infected Japan. That's more of a western thing.

But he's right. The obsession with playing these large "bombastic" sad songs during sad moments is really cliche and just having a soft sad melody, or even no music if the atmosphere is really good, would be infinitely superior.

the problem is that in a lot of games they just use the same generic shit that all sounds exactly the same

He's right, too many games have orchestral music, especially when they're trying to be sad or emotional. We need other types, every game sounds the same nowadays. It's either orchestral or inoffensive ambient/electronic music. Almost no vidya music is memorable anymore since the 90's/early 2000's.

This actually reminds me of a conversation I had almost a decade ago about the two different scores to the movie Legend, the one by Tangerine Dream and the one by Jerry Goldsmith.

The person I was talking to basically said that an orchestral score like Goldsmith's wasn't necessary and was only commissioned because providing an orchestral score to a fantasy film was accepted as the natural choice. He argued that Tangerine Dream's synthesizer-based replacement score was more appropriate because it had a softer, dream-like quality that better suited the film which, compared to other fantasy movies, wasn't as epic in scope.

My response was, yeah, TD's score worked fine enough in most scenes, but when it came to the more dramatic or action-oriented scenes, three guys with synthesizers didn't have the texture and power that a 70-piece orchestra had, and a synth-based score would inevitably fall flat in a film with scenes that called for dramatic flair.

>Is it OK to use an orchestra in an RPG?
Well, yeah, most RPGs have stories and scenes that call for orchestral music. If having sad music play over sad scene is cliche, it's because the scene itself is cliched, not the music.

lol who the fuck remembers movie music?

I watch a movie for the story, not for the fucking background music. If I want to care about music, I'll listen to an album.

Music sets up the environment and atmosphere while you are playing in a video game, so it's much more noticeable and memorable than in a movie you're just watching and paying attention to what's happening rather to what's playing as background music

I'm completely aware this is an /a/ post but I was just thinking about this last night when watching Eromanga Sensei.

The show is complete shit for the first six episodes. Part of my biggest problem was the goddamn pseudo-orchestral soundtrack. The main girl has a really soft voice, but for some reason the soundtrack really loves horns and if a scene is trying to be slightly funny you get this wide range of five different instruments trying to compliment the scene with these bombastic wacky sounds but it all it does is completely distract you because it's so out of place. Same with the more "serious "scenes, they'll have the totally full orchestral sweep whenever something even slightly """serious""" is going on and it just makes the whole show painful to watch and unlikable.

I totally agree with this guy, Japan has no fucking clue how to use orchestras.

I can see you're a pleb from a mile away
movies are not about story only, is the whole package of the medium, its about characters, dialogue, visuals and of course music.
>>
>>385020119
Music, whether you believe it matters or not, is one of the most influential and important things in media. Even if you're not directly listening to it during a scene, it affects and changes everything you are digesting and understanding about what you're watching. A music's melody, tone, volume, or even absence of, is exceptionally important.

Video game music died when they started favoring streamed music instead of synths and samples, think of how we could have music that seamlessly adapted to every situation in a game, could have little changes like adding/removing instruments and all that while barely using disc space.

I love me some single stage tracks, but where not using the medium correctly.

He's partially right. It's true that the generic orchestrated "atmospheric mood music" has become overwhelmingly prominent in game soundtracks and has stunted creativity in many cases but he's wrong in that there has not been any advancement in 20 years or as /v/ would but it "everything sucks now". The good soundtracks are just rare treats.
>>
>orchestra music in sad scenes is exclusive to games

It's Hisayoshi Ogura. He composed for a bunch of Taito games, most notably the Darius series.

The problem with atmospheric music is it's in no way memorable. It sets the mood, but accomplishes nothing else.

But hey, you get a +1 for a halfway decent shitpost.
>>
>>385017909
So he wants to remove orchestra music because he assumes videogame designers will find new ways to make us sad without having to rely on it? I don't see how that makes any sense.
>>
>>385025760
What? It's perfectly memorable. Can you not remember what the soundtrack in L.A. Noire or The Wolf Among Us was? What about the foreboding dread of bloodborne? The fucking radio from fallout? Atmospheric music doesn't just mean music that's dreary and subtle, it's music that fits the atmosphere or in other words music that immerses you within the world.
